Hi,
The other day when I logged on to my Toshiba laptop, the
screen was black and all my programs and files had been erased.
A windows repair box popped up a list of all these errors. When I clicked
on the "fix errors" button, it then let me to purchase software. Obviously, this
is a scam. Now that that is gone, How do I restore my laptop back to normal?

Hi,

What do you mean by "now that that is gone"? What is "gone", the so-called errors, or the scareware?

Download, install, update and run a FULL scan with the FREE version of Malwarebytes.

Post the log file here.

Regards,
Golden

Sounds like time for a Clean install? In addition to Malwarebytes.. download, update, do a FULL scan with SuperantiSpyware Free too. Do full scans with BOTH.
Then install MSE. This will give you real-time protection at no cost. Never believe a window which starts scanning and says you have "errors" or "viruses", it just wants your money mate.

Never believe a window which starts scanning and says you have "errors" or "viruses", it just wants your money mate.

Not only that, but don't assume it's gone...it probably deposited who knows what in your system & is quietly waiting to gather log on info and other personal items.

Anytime anything pops up saying you have a virus, ask yourself:

"Did I install this software in my system?"

And look closely at the pop up, some of them mimic the popular AV's.

It wouldn't surprise me if this was yet another angle at getting people to install malware, it looks like it "fixes the problem", then apparently disappears & lies quietly in wait on your PC gathering info.

Hi, isaiah40.

I doubt that the rogue is gone from your laptop yet. Please follow the instructions here in the order provided, being sure to follow through to the end: Remove HDD Defragmenter (Uninstall Guide).
