HELP!!!

I've been using Windows 7 RC for about 6 months with no problems whatsoever best os I’ve had. A couple of days ago I shut my laptop down as normal and upon booting up again a day later it decided it wasn't going to boot and subsequently loaded the boot repair menus. After several failed attempts to recover the system I decided I would try to fix the problem by booting from the windows 7 disk. I selected boot repair again this time however it took considerably longer to do what it does and when I restarted everything looked fine (windows loaded it let me log in etc) however I now get some weird errors. The 1st one I noticed was the fact that I cannot move any icons anywhere (holding left mouse and drag to move somewhere just comes up with the black circle with a line through it saying no you can't do that) the 2nd problem that im now getting is when trying to open device manager from the system properties I get the following message: MMC cannot initialize because the MMC installation or a portion of the registry is corrupted. You can attempt to fix the problem by running the following command: regsvr32%systemroot%\system32\mmcndmgr.dll any help would be appreciated as I don't want to resort to a format of my hard drive again.

Hi Kirky,

When you ran the repair, your graphics driver might have become unstable, or not working at all.

Uninstall the driver if possible, and re-install it.

Hi kirky,

You could try running an 'elevated' command prompt, type cmd into the start menu then right-click & run as administrator. Next, type sfc /scannow as this will check ALL system files for integrity errors and replace any that may have been corrupted.

It's worth a try, i'll look further into the registry part for you.

Thanks for the quick replies guys, ive tried the scan you suggest, it got to 22% then said windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. details are included in the cbs log blah blah blah i can post the log buts its massive lol im currently downloading the latest drivers from nvidia but i dont hold much hope that it will fix anything. i've just found another little problem. in ie8 when i click on a link nothing happens i have to right click and say open in new window (possibly to do with compatibility view?)

Have you managed to boot into safe mode by any chance?

does the exact same thing in safe mode 22% generates a cbs log in sysroot

reinstalled graphics drivers no change i saw a registry fix for the icons issue but i think that was for xp so dont want to try in in win7 for fear of buggering it up even more lol

all issues remain the same in safe mode tho

Ah ha! i managed to fix the device manager problem for anyone else having the same problem just type regsvr32.exe %SystemRoot%\system32\mmcndmgr.dll into the run command. don't copy the one off the error message because there is no space between .exe and the % so it wont work just copy the one i just put.

Now for the other problems

still can't move my icons on the desktop or anywhere else for that matter. Any suggestions anyone?

I hate to say the obvious but if a repair cant fix it you are going to have to re-install. I know what a pita it is but even if you manage to fix most of your current problems with corruption the problem is only going to get worse.
