I just happened to think about this. What do you do if you are running W7 RTM and you want to get a new retail version? Do you get the upgrade version, meaning you have to load Vista back on then install your upgrade disk from 7? Or, do you buy the full version instead of the upgrade? I have never seen anything discussed about what the people do that already have RTM.

This all depends on what you mean by RTM... is this a download from MSDNAA, TechConnect etc. etc. Is it Ultimate, Home, get the idea... we need this info before we can advise you on what to do....

Blow off the old version and load the OEM version CLEAN.
( use Custom install and let the installer format the HD for you)

An upgrade version won't do you a bit of good if your HD crashes and you have to reload your OS to a brand new HD.

Briefly, a Windows 7 Ultimate Installation can normally not change into a minor version of "Windows 7 Home Premium" or "Professional". If you have installed a preview version of Windows 7 Ultimate (e.g. beta, release candidate build 7100 or RTM build 7600) and want to install a cheaper version Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional the installation is refused, but with a change of a registry key while installing you can fake a minor version - so you can install the minor version.

I am running W7 RTM, Ultimate from Technet. I realy don't need the Ultimate, and would do just fine with Professional. I have my Vista discs that I can load if I need to, which is Vista Business. I realize that I can just go and download it from Technet, but there is something about having the full OS.

Besides, there are some quirky little problems I am experiencing with my RTM so I wouldn't mind doing a clean install.

I just thought of this as well. If I were to load my Vista back on, which has all the drivers, programs and such from Panansonic that I really like, then I purchased an upgrade to W7, would it keep all the same drivers, and programs? The reason I ask is there are a couple of items that I can just not get to work right with W7. Of course they work just fine when I load my Vista disc from Panny. Plus there are some programs that you can't get anywhere else except for those discs.

Sitting here thinking about it, it sounds like I shoud load my Vista disc, then do an upgrade to W7 professional, then all my Panny stuff will still be all there. Does that make sense?

Unless the one in the shiny box is a different build number, there there isnt a use to reinstall, unless the op wants a clean OS install.
