hey guys i just bought an hp pavillion g7-1355dx

the specs on it are:

processor - 2.4GHz/1.5GHz VISION A6 Technology from AMD with AMD Quad-Core A6-3420M Accelerated Processor

memory - 4GB DDR3 SDRAM (1 DIMM)

video graphics - AMD Radeon HD 6520G Discrete-Class Graphics

hard drive - 500GB 5400RPM

display - 17.3-inch diagonal HD+ BrightView LED-backlit display (1600 x 9000)

operating system - Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)

(guys i really dont know what most of this means, i really just copied+pasted from a website) i brought my buddy with me to buy this thing, and hes a techie himself.. however i am not.

i have a few questions about this thing though, thats why im here.

1. is this a good quality machine? as far as the graphics card, motherboard, processor etc... is it cheap?

2. i use microsoft security essentials for my only virus protection. is this good enough?

3. i use mozilla firefox for my browser is this the best browser to use?

4. id like to upgrade my memory (thats ram right?) from 4gb to the maximum i can have on here. whats the max memory i can have on this laptop? and whats the best brand of memory/best place to order it from?

5. the box for my computer said pavillion g7-1355dx.. but i can not find that model number anywhere in my computers settings or anything, where would i find this?

6. i know the processor speed goes by ghz... how come mine says 2.4/1.5 ghz?? why wouldnt it just say one number instead of the two (when i push start > right click on computer > properties, it says 1.5 ghz not 2.4 ghz

Yes. I can`t bleave how cheap that is . I`d be all over that.

Not hard to install. There is a cover over the memory on the back maybe a screw or 2. Memory is notched so it only goes in 1 way. There are probably many videos on youtube or ask your friend. After you do that you really shouldn`t mess with it any more, being a noob.

1: Looks fine to me.
2: Add Malwarebytes AntiMalware.
3: I only use IE8 or Google.
4: Covered.
5: Use System Information in System Tools.
6: Most likely because it`s a multicore CPU.

I was taught to buy the most I could for what I could afford. I would have bought as much memory as I could when I picked out the pc. Now you're looking to install more memory post sale. I know you could have found a 6GB RAM pc off the shelf. I would download Malwarebytes anti spyware to supplement your setup.
I have used Firefox for years and like it. If you're using a 64 bit machine, there is Waterfox for 64 bit.

1. What are you using this for? Gaming? School? Word processing? Art?
2. If you're going to be upgrading the RAM to 8GB, then you should put it on a cooling pad (get a decent one like Coolermaster, not some crappy $10 one).


To answer your questions:

1. Depends what you're using it for.
2. I'd also download MalwareBytes and Avast antivirus.
3. Firefox is good, so is Chrome.
4. Best place - Depends where you live. If you're in the US, newegg is great.
5. Why does it matter?
6. It says 1.5ghz because that's how much is currently left for use. Windows is weird with that, it won't show the total amount you have, but instead the total amount that's not in use.

The 1.5GHZ/2.4GHz thing probably means the chip can turbo upto the higher speed for short bursts, hence the name 'accelerated'.

There's a free version of malwarebytes I'm pretty sure.

Laptops are never good for playing intense games on. They get very hot (which is why the cooling pad is good, especially if you're putting more RAM in), and are less powerful than a desktop. My HP DV6 had terrible air ventilation and if I tried to play mildly intensive games (eg. Minecraft or Skyrim), it would overheat, not sure how the DV7's are designed. Your processor is also pretty slow.

Also check your warranty terms and conditions. A lot of brands consider modification of hardware to be in breach of them and thus void your warranty.

Hi there M8R8J and welcome to the Forum. The suggestions made so far are great and typical of the high quality help you will find here. To add my two cents ---
First and formost, create a set of recovery DVD's. The program to do this is part of the HP software on your computer. This action usually requires between 3 and 5 DVD's to create a full set. In the event that your hard drive ever crashed, you could replace the hard drive and then use the recovery DVD's to get you back to Factory Condition. If the hard drive is phyically ok but Windows is too scrambled to repair, there is a hidden RECOVERY PARTITION on your hard drive which will allow a full Factory Condition recovery also.
I have always felt that Notebook manufacturers should include a page , in bold red type, on the keybaord as the first thing you see when you open the laptop up that says - "Warning, stop, 1st, make a backup set of DVD's" You never know when you may need them.
Good luck with your machine and if you ever need answers, there are tons of good folks here ready and willing to help you out.

For gaming it's slow, for everything else it's fine.
Your graphics card is also integrated, meaning there's no dedicated graphics memory which means games that are graphics intensive will struggle.

First and formost, create a set of recovery DVD's.

great advice.

in addition get and use a backup imaging program so you can restore to a more recent "configuration" of your PC.

you may have a built in Win 7 Backup image program

HP's have the worst load of bloatware and useless factory utilities which have much better versions built into Win7. This unnecessarily throttles the first featherlight, instantaneous OS.

Look over these steps to Clean up factory bloatware.

The step which will help the most and cut off all the freeloaders is to achieve a clean boot by turning off everything except AV in msconfig>Startup and >Services (after hiding all MS Services). Run free lightweight Microsoft Security Essentials.

As it says in the steps you'll need to disengage the useless HP Wireless before turning it off to use Win7 superior wireless, which will also gain back 20-30 seconds at startup.
