Hi, need some help

Hi, i'm new here. I've got a quick question. Ok, I wanted to create a new account on my win7 laptop for my friends to use. So i created a new account thinking that it would have it's own separate picture, doc, etc, folders but when i log in with the new account all my files show up under the libraries... Call me crazy but in Vista didn't every account have it's own file folders separated? This is annoying to me because i wanted to create an account that would let my friends be able to use my computer but not be able to see or have access to any of my files, i.e. they click my pictures and it shows that nothing is there and if they were to navigate to my files in my regular account it would ask for a password or something. I thought this would all be easy with 7 but now i'm kinda miffed that it isn't. Please help. Thanks. SPACE

Welcome!

First, make sure they have a standard user account, not an administrator account.

Have you considered turning on the Guest account? That will likely do what you are wanting.

I agree with Jon the guest account is the best and most diplomatic way to go. I say diplomatic because there is also parental controls, which gives you complete control over what the guest can and cannot do.

If you set up a standard account, you will be able to give or restrict permissions for programs etc.

i actually setup the guest account first. the only real option it gives me is to change the password or picture! I don't understand any of this. I just want a separate user of this computer to only be able to view the files i want them to. I.E., they have their own separate stuff and i have mine and they cannot see that mine exist... am i dreaming here or didn't this used to be easy? Please help.

Password your acccount and leave the Guest account unpassworded so your guests can easily access it.

While in Guest account, they will not be able to install any programs or make settings changes without your permission, or access your files without you sharing them first.

Test this yourself by logging on Guest account and trying to access the files you want to keep private. They should not be accessible, and if so when you return to your account restrict their access by rightclicking your User account, selecting Properties and editing Permissions to turn off their access.

Set up your standard or guest account. In your account right click on the libraries you wish to protect and click share with ... choose Nobody.
