Solved hibernation is not hibernating

Hi Guys,

I am in a bit of a jam and hope someone can help me solve this problem.'

I have just re-installed Windows 7 and just found out my hibernation is not hibernating. The screen just goes blank but the system does not shut off / hibernate mode. I have to manually shut it down at this stage by holding down the power on button.

The problem causing this as I have read could be due to my C: partition not being marked active. I have a System Reserved partition also and it shows as Marked Active & System, which I am assuming is where the bootloader is. Now in order to make hibernation function I think I need to make the C: partition as active, however as it states in this threads' warning, marking it active could render my system to not boot.

Therefore is there a way I can fix this to Mark my C: Partition as active so I can have my system hibernate as normal ??

I have attached a snip of what it looks like in Disk Management.

I don't get your problem because the system reserved is supposed to be active. If C is active, your OS won't boot up at all. Try using http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html to check if your hibernate system file is corrupted. Post your results after that.

Hello Maco,

In addition, you might also test to se if you are able to hibernate the PC between troubleshooting with a clean startup to see if something may be found as hanging hibernate.

Did you check your power options ?

But if you`ve installed windows in the past and it has gone into hibernation from the get go, there should be no reason it won`t now.

Thanks for the replies.

I do realize there could have been many reasons for my system not hibernating [just hanging ] and reading through the many possibilities on the internet, after the process of elimination of a few of these possibilities having the "partition" marked active was the one I thought was why it was not completely going into a hibernated state. As you can see from the snip the "System Reserved" partition is marked active, not the C: partition, however I am gathering from the replies having the system reserved partition marked active is one of the same.

Anyway, another possibility that I tried last night was to reset hibernation by disabling it and the re-enabling it again [which I should have done before posting]. This was also mentioned in an article which had been a noted bug in Windows 7 and resetting it could fix an issue with the system properly hibernating. I tried this and clicked on hibernate. After about 10 seconds my laptop shutdown in a hibernated state.

Hopefully it is all good and that's all that was need to resolve this issue.

Yes check all Power Options in CP & agree, I have re-installed windows XP and Windows 7 many times and I have never had this problem. Sleep was working fine but I tried to hibernate on 3 separate occassions and each time it would hang on a black blank screen with my keyboard lights still lit and processor still running. It would remain like this for over a minute, so there must have been something causing it to not properly hibernate.

Thank, I get it now, but I thought that maybe my C: partition was suppose to be marked active and not the System reserved and that was the reason causing it to hang at hibernate. Obviously i was wrong and you learn something new every time.

I do however have an older desktop that has 1 HDD partitioned into 2 partitions C: and D: but it has no "System Reserved" partition.

That's great news Maco. I'm happy to hear hibernate is working for you now without having to do to much.

Yeah Brink, as us windows user can appreciate nothing gets up your skin more than when your PC does not work the way you'd like it to. The more you spend fiddling around with the technical side of windows the more you realise how complex it really is and the many possibilities there are when issues that arise.

Hopefully this one for me is sorted.
