Hidden .files folders

My music, photo, and video folders all have hidden folders such as mp3.files and jpg.files. The hidden photo folders seem to contain thumbnails (two sizes), I'm not sure what is in the video folders, and the mp3 folders are empty. Is is safe to delete these? Or maybe just the empty ones? And is there any way I can stop Windows from creating the .files folders in the first place?

Hi kp11 and welcome.
First I would say it is never safe to delete a folder if you are not sure what it does whether it has any content or not! Please post the actual path to these folders as they may well be junction link folders which are system folders required by Windows. If you go to Tools then Folder options, scroll down until you see "Dont show hidden folders or files" and check the radio button. See if the folders you are talking about are still available. If they are hidden just forget them.

The path is
C:\Mandi\Music

and it lists the type as: File folder (.files)

There are no items in the folder with 0 bytes being used, but a new folder is created for every song, photo, or video. I deleted the empty music folders and the songs play just fine. All of the tag info is still intact (including the album covers I don't want) so I can't imagine why the folders were created in the first place.

Am lost a bit on this but are you saying that everytime you import a picture file to your PC to the folder designated by you Win 7 creates a separate folder straight in the "C" drive in folder named "Mandi"? Is the word "Mandi" relevant? Perhaps if you attached a screenshot of exactly what is there that would help!

I found my problem. It's not windows creating the extra folders but Vaio's Analysis software. For anyone else with this problem, you have to uncheck the analyze music, photos, and video in the software settings. You can delete the extra folders, they're just wasting space.

I had the exact same problem with my Sony VAIO PCG-61611M laptop creating duplicate (.files)
hidden music, photo & video folders? I couldn't find solution anywhere until came across this old
forum post and now have disable VAIO analysis manager and fix the problem for good.

Just for those who don't know how to do it...
1. Go to windows start and type "analysis manager settings" in the search program & files box.
2. Click on VAIO Analysis Manager Settings and uncheck analyze photo, video & music setting.
3. Also disable all analysis manager uncheck preference learning function setting then press ok.
