Hi, i have a asus p6t mobo, with a i7 920 cpu and a asus engtx 260 gpu. when i connect to a lcd monitor via a dvi cable the cpu fan is quiet but when i connect to a 42" lcd tv using the supplied dvi to hdmi plug the cpu fan runs faster and louder this is from a cold start in both instances.any ideas.?

I have set the cpu fan in bios to silent and used turbo mode this seems to quieten the fan down, i have also used the asus epu6 engine to control the fan speed,(I initialy thought it was the gpu fan), I have monitored the temps and run various benchmarks nothing seems to be out of place or running to hot it is just when the tv is connected.

Cheers

so normally on boot your cpu fan spins full speed , then as the bios kicks in fan speed control takes over , but with yours (and a tv connected) it stays at full speed after boot?

are you sure its the cpu fan and not your gpu fan? (sorry i have to ask ;) )

No worries mate, Yep definitely sure its the cpu fan, if i use asus epu 6 engine control, i can drop the cpu fan speed down or up manually, if ido that then i can hear the difference.
more of a concern though is the fact that when i connect to a pc lcd monitor the fan is quiet(when i set the fan speed to standard in the bios) and when i connect to my lcd tv the speed shoots up to the point that it sounds like it wants to take off(still in standard setting in the bios).
At the moment i control the speed by having it in turbo mode in the bios(although i may change to silent mode) then using the epu 6 engine i can control it from the desktop, not ideal but until i can figure out what is causing it it's all i can do.

Have you used any monitoring programs to actually confirm the CPU fan speed? You can d/l HWMonitor and see what speeds actually are:

HWMonitor

D/L GPU-Z to monitor the GPU

GPU-Z

It would be most unusual for the CPU speed to increase in that manner, not impossible of course.

Also have an Asus ha1002xp netbook with Win 7 Ultimate installed.
So the size of the 'new' monitor is not a factor at all?
Just curious, I dont have any 'new' test equipment, I recently added a 21.5" LED TV via HDMI as a 2nd monitor when I want it, works very well, I had never used HDMI before to a PC and that added a second sound source, wasn't expecting that, had to do some tweaking, but my 5850 can handle it and haven't noticed any issues, otherwise.

Cheers for the replies. Got a whole bunch of monitors cpuz, gpuz, speed fan (karlsnooks cheers forgot that one), hw monitor, and the list goes on.
none of the monitors show any thing out of the ordinary(system is only running the desktop).
I have it under control using extra software, but i was wondering why,? i could understand if it was the gpu fan but not the cpu fan.

Still its under control for the moment i am going to run more tests, change a few settings just to see if i can get to the root of the problem.

Any more ideas most welcome cheers

raz,

Can onlly suggest going to manufacturer's web site.

Make sure that you have the latest bios for your motherboard.
Check for faq or other documentation there which may be of help.
Contact, via email or live chat if they offer, them with your question.

Cheers all, just waiting on a reply from the Asus web site, but my experience with most suppliers is not good. In fact i have had quicker more helpful and more accurate replies from forums than from the suppliers, in general they are pretty poor, they probably dont want to spend the money on support or they are like ostriches and hope the problem will go away;)

Thanks once again

Raz

Stock fans are not efficient, have you tried replacing it for something cooler and quieter?

Ah yes, CPU wise, always buy better paste and heatsink/fan, Intel is notorious for their subpar included ones.

Check out newegg reviews on them, I found combo around $30 that was top rated, and except for the crappy plastic clips forcing one to be ultra careful, it's been golden, that was mentioned in the review, clean the fan/heatsink carefully a few times a year, I use q-tips and compressed air.
