Solved High Idle Temps

Everything was fine with my GPU until around a week or two ago. I noticed my computer was running loud and checked my GPU software and it said that my computer was running around 70C with the temperature being around 76 (Fahrenheit) inside! I turned it off and let it sit for a while and turned it back on and it still went up to 70C!

Before when I used my computer my GPU would run around 35C on idle when the temperature outside (I keep my windows open for anything under 72F) was in the 60s, but now it is in the 60s outside with this recent cold front and my GPU is running close to 55-60C on IDLE.

Here is a pic of its current status (Room temperature < 60F):

I just took the manufacturing thermal paste off and put some Arctic Silver on it and the temperature came down to around 50-55C now, but that is still WAAAAY to high for a computer on idle.

My air flow in my computer should be fine, it was working fine how I set it up a few months ago, I have just recently started having problems with my GPU, but haven't changed a thing on the inside of my case.

Any ideas?

I assume you've checked that your fan is running and it is not clogged with dust. But, you're right 70 is entirely too high. Maybe set a more aggressive fan profile in Precision X. May help some.

Am I wrong? It looks like your card is maxed out. It's beyond the boost clock. I know they do that, but not at idle.

Obviously everything else is running really cool, so the airflow isn't the problem.

It was perfectly clean when I took it apart and replaced the thermal paste a few hours ago. What I am confused about is why it is so high all of a sudden, It has never been like this, it just started about a week or so ago. Also, about the card maxing out, I have no idea what could be doing that, I did not set it to do that. I managed to bring it down some using the GPU clock offset that you can see in the picture of PrecisionX, but I don't know how to get it down any further.

Hi bud, the screen shot you posted off precision x is not at idle. At idle it should run at around 300mhz iirc and the voltage should be lower.

If you took the screen shot at what you thought was idle then something is wrong. Did you mess with any settings in precision x ?

Maybe uninstall precision x and reinstall.

Reset my bios and that seemed to work. I only had one thing on there changed so it wasn't a really big deal for me. Here is a pic of it now:

Good job. That looks great, just like it should. Well done, except I think it's running too cool now. ;)

Looks very good. I have found that sometime the programs that come with the card don't always read correctly.
