On my second display I house all of my game icons and they're set to extra large. For some time all displayed properly but recently a few of them started to show up in their lower resolution form. I've tried re-setting the icon and that didn't work. I've tried rebuilding the icon database and that didn't work. Here is a shot for visual aid:

It is super irritating to me as I love my big icons. :(
Apologies if this was solved elsewhere.. I looked.
Oh I guess I should also note that they are internet shortcuts created by Steam.
Thanks in advance.

This is not a problem with Windows, but rather the program that is providing the icon. Even from the early days of Windows 3.1, internal program icon resources included 16x16 and 32x32 icons in 16 colors. With Windows XP, this was expanded to include 48x48 icons, and also allowed 256 color icons. With the introduction of Windows Vista, icon resource can now include 256x256 icons in hi-color PNG format.

Windows will display the largest, highest-color depth icon that it finds. Not all programs currently include 256x256 PNG icons, which is why you get the small 48x48 icon instead.

The only alternative is to download your own icons, and then set the icon for a shortcut manually...

Those icons DO support those depths and resolutions though. I did set them manually. I specifically downloaded high resolution icons. As I said.. they used to display in their high resolution form but now they don't.

Sorry, I've only just gotten out of bed, and haven't yet had my coffee.

Have you check the properties of the shortcut to check if it is still pointing to the correct icon file? Also, if you re-create the icon (don't copy it, create a new one from scratch), does the large icon show, or is it still the small one?

Even if I create the shortcut from scratch and set it to the high resolution icon it still shows the little one.

Where did you find those game icons? They're really cool.

Try the Icon Viewer utility that was recommended by Brink to another member. Install it, and then check the EXE, DLL or ICO files you are using for you icons, and see if the icon resources embedded within do indeed contain icons larger than 48x48...

The IconViewer program adds an Icons tab to the properties of EXE, DLL and ICO files, allowing you to view internal icon resources:
