High speed broadband runs like 56k modem age

Hi, I am in Hong Kong and I have been using this internet service provider, which is considered to be the best ISP in Hong Kong for over 7 years. The speed was always perfect, speedtest with A* grade always. But it was only until a week ago. Since last week, the speed has significantly and drastically dropped and it's like going back to the 56k modem age (or even worse). Almost no webpages could be loaded. Most local webpages could only show some pictures while a lot of pictures are ''dead''. It takes hours to load the MSN or hotmail pages which is absolutely not the peak traffic problem claimed by the CS of my ISP. They are not solving problems and reject to send technicians here because they said "Your IP address is correct, so there is no problem"
and they said there were no maintainence or site work in my buidling, and they 've checked that the speed was correct at their side. It's 100MB/s upload and 100MB/s download

IT IS TOTALLY NOT TRUE. I have then tested with speedtest, the result was either D or C grade with 5-10% packet loss. I tried to download something 5MB but it took me 30 minutes to finish. I've been living in this building for 10 years and it is not really densely populated. After all, I strongly believe the problem is not about peak traffic.

The download speed was still that terrible until yesterday, the download speed has become alright, it has got to ninety MB per second something which is perfect, but the upload speed was still that bad, I can't upload any small attachment to email and took hours to send a small file to my friend. I've checked with speedtest, the download speed is 9X MB/s but upload speed is 0.02MB/s and the result is C or D with some packet loss.

1. What could be the problem?
2. Could it be the lan (that's on-board lan) fail? or any other parts of computer *partially* fail?
3. Last week it was raining very heavily here, but no flood. These few days it's sunny and hot the whole day. Could it be the reason?

Welcome to the world of ISP it took 5 months and 6 engineers to solve my Internet speed issue. they kept telling me the problem was in my house so not their fault.. until I got someone who knew what they were doing, did one test on the junction to my house and diagnosed the problem in seconds. replaced the line to my house and effectively trippled the speed I got before I had any issues!!

to rule out a pc issue which its almost 100% not.. try connecting to your internet via a phone or tablet if possible and do tests using that device. if its the same slowness then its nothing to do with your gadgets.

a router/modem issue is possible.. but doubtful.

water could be the cause, depends how the cables enter your premisis.

I never use router and there is no any modem for this broadband. The lan goes directly from the wall to the computer with no connectors or any devices connected in the middle.

I don't know how the cables enter my premisis, the premisis was built in late 80s. 50 families there

ah ok.. thenn you have a problem,you could have a worn out cable going to your home thats cauing so much "noise" that all of your band width is lost.

it could also be a problem at the switch (the box where all of your cables meet the modem/router).

if everyone elses internet is fine then the issue lies within your cabling, if they all have issues its a switch issue.

what I dont get is how you are able to pick and choose your isp if you don't have your own router/modem connected to a telephone line!
or is it not an ethernet cable connected to your pc??

Hi, I don't understand what it means by ethernet but let me try to describe. There is a special port on the wall of my home where there are two ports - One for LAN and one for telephone line. The one for telephone is not connected to any wires since we only use mobile phones now. The one for LAN is plugged with the LAN wires. Then it (One cable) goes directly to the lan port on my PC. There is no stoppage in the middle of the way.

The cable was a decent LAN cable bought only last year. I know problems could happen at any time but I guess it's not the problem with the cable

I don't know if it was likely because of the recent heavy rains. It happened only when the first heavy and terrible rain of the year came around 20 May, and now, the terrible rain is all over and sunny at all times, the download speed is correct (90MB/s) but the upload speed remains problems now (0.02MB/s). I can't upload any things with some obvious size.

Do you have ASUS AI Suite installed? If so, open it up and see if Network iControl is installed and enabled. If it is, turn it off, it's a massive bandwidth killer. I found that out on my kids' PC a couple of weeks ago, a fresh install of Windows 7 on an SSD and steam was downloading games at about 300Kb/s. Everything was fine before the fresh install on the new SSD so I knew it was something I'd done since the install, AI Suite II was one of the three programs I'd installed so I checked it and found that. Turned Network iControl off and Steam download speeds were back up to 4Mb/s instantly. It kills upload speeds as well apparently.
