Hit a snag

Went to clone my partners old Toshiba 5400rpm drive with this - Seagate ST500LM000 Laptop Thin SSHD only to find at the last moment the Toshiba is a 600GB drive
Now I can use this - Seagate ST1000LM014 Laptop SSHD 1TB ($40 more) or this - Western Digital WD Black WD7500BPKX 750GB (bit cheaper than the Seagate 500GB),

But a) I don't like WD stuff and b) wondering if I can just copy the first two partitions on the old drive once I have reduced the size of the C: partition with Partition Wizard and hope it just boots from it or not??

Just as well I didn't buy a 500GB SSD for her as I would have been well up the creek without a you know what

I think you're right on the money John - reduce C: - then clone system and C: to the SSD.

Just make sure C: is reduced enough, if you can give yourself a bit of a margin, say 20%.

That would make C: 480GB+ 100MB for system (hmmm, your disk 0 part 1 is 1.46 GB - still plenty of room) You can extend C: on the SSD afterwards

Thanks Bill that is a relief as I saw me up for more dough. The drive in question (I am cloning to) is a Seagate ST500LM000 Laptop Thin SSHD 500GB and from the ad video seems to be a mix of SSD and spinner. The sizing mate is ok as she has only 35% used on that drive so reducing as you say is not a problem.
Now just so I have it right that last partition the 10.89GB - I can ignore as it does have data in there but for the life of me I cannot make out what ?? I did explore it with the Partition Wizard and it had folders in in it and some were just empty and I am guessing it is some Toshiba rubbish wear.
Anyway will soon see when I clone those two partitions to the new drive.

how much used space is the 600GB? you might be able to not clone but just migrate it.

It looks as though Macrium Reflect offers a resize option, but I would resize C: anyway before the clone is made.

RVC it all adds up to 596.17GB and
Bill I guess I might have to shrink all three partitions to less than what the total is and then clone the lot and then resize back to what they are originally. I then size the partitions on the new drive to suit ie make that first and third one as small as possible and the main larger partition as large as I can.
However I suppose the machine is still going to recognise the old drive as 600GB even with those three partitions smaller and baulk at cloning it.
Thing is I don't want to wreck anything because you will see on the news - horrendous murder of geek in Australia.

No at the moment I am away from her place and don't have access to pull up how much is used but I seem to remember the disk was about 54% used but as I said the clone program is till going to see a 600GB drive in there - I suppose even if it were near empty.

I think all you need to do is shrink C: and clone the 600GB disk using Macrium

Maybe clone is the wrong term / process.

Make an image of the 600 GB drive after shrinking C: to the maximum available space (+5% buffer). Shrinking C: will make the image smaller anyway.

Then you have the image to play with.

The restore operation using Macrium can be canceled if the resize isn't offered - no horrendous murder involved

I mentioned this in the PM - you might have to force Macrium to offer the resize by creating a part at the end of the drive. When Macrium sees that some of the disk is already allocated, it might only then offer the Resize - I'm not sure if this is necessary though.

If you use something like acronis you should not have to shrink anything. As it only takes what is there I use it for all my stuff. It should let you restore it to a smaller drive as long as the used space is smaller than the capacity. You make an image not a clone then restore the image to the smaller drive and it will just end up being same less free space on the main partition. I thought partition wizard did this also.
