Okay, this is driving me crazy. My current setup is:

Laptop connected to TV through HDMI.
TV connected to receiver through optical cable.

It has always worked this way, I always had surround sound and all. Yesterday my mother disconnected both the HDMI & optical cables for freaking reason, now that I connected them back on, I'm only getting 2.0 sound through my receiver. I don't know what to try next, this has been an issue before but I always somehow managed to fix it but now it really gets the better of me. Any help will be greatly appreciated, I was so planning on watching a few movies tonight but without my surround sound, I be better off to bed.

Thanks in advance.

Try a System Restore back to a date when it did work. May take care of it.
System Restore can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools. It will not delete any user data/e-mails, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion, I did a system restore to a state 4 days earlier. It didn't work. I'm thinking there's something fishy between the TV and the receiver in particular, could be due to cable removing. I also installed Windows 8 consumer preview through VirtualBox (well, it's not there now but it could have something to do with it, not sure.
