...this is Microsoft's way of getting everyone to leave Win7 for Win10? I tried 10 and didn't like it.

This whole mess makes me want to take a trip to the Apple Store and learn how to use a Mac. I can get their 27" Retina 5K system for $2K and they are even offering 18 months interest free. Soooo tempting. I'll sleep on it for now and see if this Standalone Installer does any good.

I've stood by Microsoft all these many years as they used us (the public) to debug Windows. But why does this suddenly pop up during a reinstall? I've done several reinstalls of Win7 before with no problems. Yeah, they have an 'Update Troubleshooter' so they know the problem exists, but I'm having my doubts about their intentions.

I agree, I don't think it is any coincidence that all these WU troubles with Windows 7 started just about the same time Windows 10 was arriving, even just a bit sooner which is all the more suspicious since the MS servers shouldn't have been overwhelmed before the official release of 10.

I think all of us can do only speculate. Microsoft will never inform us truthfully.

My speculation is this.
Because of all the W-10 download it just plain tied up Microsoft Servers. I also think it put a load on the entire internet bandwidth.
Because Microsoft was allowing counterfeit Windows 7 to download W-10 also put a heave load on servers.

Now the question is did Microsoft know their servers were going to be overloaded with request caused by W-10.

I guess I just asked a dumb question.

Of course Microsoft new it was going to tie up Windows 7 updates.
Microsoft set the priorities of what their server were going to be used for.
I'm quite sure Microsoft has the ability to control their servers.

As I say I'm speculating because Microsoft will never release the information to truly answer this question.

I have been a fan boy for Microsoft for years but I trusted Microsoft then.
Microsoft will have to do some major changes at the top before I trust them again.

I do believe that with the proper management changes in Microsoft W-10 will live strong in the market place. If done right people like me will want to buy W-10.
That is the true measuring stick; how many will buy W-10. How many will take a free W-10 does not impress me.

I tell you what, the 27" 5K iMac is starting to look pretty good. That even caused Dell to drop the price on their 5K monitor, which was selling for more than the whole iMac system. Probably the only downside is you can never use that Apple monitor on any other computer, not even an Apple MacBook. That's the problem with these all-in-one systems.

I personally have just stopped worrying about updates
If they come they come = if not oh well I refuse to manually search for updates anymore since the end of first quarter of 2015.
I've also just stopped relying on M$ security since it's never been very good anyway there's no love loss ;)

Welcome to 2020 this is a leap year :)

Well I don't currently have any problems with Windows updates. The daily check takes less than one minute and updates download just fine with one exception - if it's Patch Tuesday then it's probably better to wait for a day or two before downloading updates.

Note: I've had problems with Windows Updates previously and a full removal and reinstall of Windows Updates fixed things.

Well I don't currently have any problems with Windows updates. ...
Same here. However, this last round last week (approx. 70 wu's) I did have problems (download fails, startup configuration fails/reverting) and decided to manually download a few at a time with total success (see my previous post). An unexpected benefit was that I had suffered unusual high cpu activity due to svchost services. Once all my updates were finally installed my machine has 'calmed down' and all's well again.
