I just received a nice alert from Norton that my Norton Internet Security 2014 software will expire in 23 days. I've always used Norton; can't imagine any other antivirus/security software, but for some reason, this year it pains me to pay the $69.99 renewal charge...and I'd be afraid to run a free program.
I'm in a quandary. As always, any thoughts you all might have will be much appreciated. ec

Get Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium - $25/year (3 PC)
And use Microsoft Security Essentials as AV.

The 2 will play along nicely.

Or you can search for a Norton coupon code and buy a new license if it is cheaper. Just make sure you disable automatic renewal. https://www.coupons.com/coupon-codes/norton/

Thanks ever so much for your reply. I have recently read some negative stuff about Windows Essential, but I do have Malwarebytes PRO paid version so I'll follow your advise and try out the two. ellenc

I use ZA Extreme (I am on the same boat as you, 60USD for renewal - I have 142 more days) and MBAM Pro. There was a 50% coupon code around, but the 1 year starts as soon as I buy a new license :) so I decided to wait and will see when I run out of time.

From what I have learned from more experienced members is MSE alone is not that great, but combined with paid MBAM (Premium/Pro) it does the job nicely.

My Mum has been using Norton for about 10 or more years and she never renews it she goes to one of the large computer brick and mortar stores near her town and buy's a new DVD for considerably less than renewing it. I always install it for her buy first downloading the Norton uninstall software from their site and run that to completly remove all traces of it, then install the newest version

I've been using Norton Internet Security package for some time now, maybe 10 years. I guess I'm either too lazy or busy to change from the annual update cost, but I like the way the package works. Yesterday, Norton rolled out a new version of NIS, not just the daily update. I have done the big box store cheap buy when my old version was no longer update able, but I usually just let Symantic charge me for the annual renewal. I also run malwarebytes, SpyBot, and MSERT scans if I think something is amiss and they almost always come up empty, but rely on NIS for the constant protection and firewall functions. Last year's renewal was $68, but I still think it's good insurance. I look at the NIS log files and see what it's stopping.

Agree. Buying antivirus software is like buying the insurance, without antivirus software protection, your computer may get virus in any time. and once get the virus, sometime it take lots of time to remove the virus, sometimes you may lose your precious data, the worst case you may need to re-install your system plus lose all your data. That is too much work.

Once the license expires, you cannot wait until on sale is available since you need to protect it all the time, most of time, during holiday time, there is an on sale going on. Now it is back to China time, you should be able find lots of deal on the internet, you may check the $30 Off Norton Coupon Code, Discount - Aug 2015 for Norton coupon code, if you want more cheap, you may try Bitdefender coupon code, it has $29 for all the products for 3 PCs 1 year.

BTW, if you try to find a deal in the local store, sometimes during holiday you may get $0 deals after rebate, only need to put the tax on the full price. But you need to follow the instructions such as cutting the code and attaching the receipt etc., to send in and wait for the rebate by a check. If you miss one of instruction, you may get denied and need to resend. Sometimes you may forget this and that and the mail may somehow get lost and even you get the check, you may forget to cash it out. That is the price to get the $0 deal.

Hope this help!

Microsoft is either the number 1 or 2 most used anti virus program in the world. It varies from month to month.

That being said, MSE must work for many millions of people. Me being one of them.

It's free and I think it will always be free. That is exactly what bothers companies that sell anti virus programs.

I also don't care that it is free.
Free or paid for, the first things it must do on my system is work properly and don't make me spend half of my computer time tinkering with it.
It must not argue with Windows 7 or Malwarebytes.

I really don't care which anti virus program uses.

What I have used for years is Microsoft Security Essential combined with Malwarebytes Anti Malware Pro/Premium. Both active at the same time and manually updated often.

It works for me and my computers.

My first paid AV was Norton back in 2003 or so when I was still using Win95. When the renewal came up a month before it was to end, it was around $40, $45. I paid it at the time because I didn't know anything else.
In 2005 I found a British magazine with a CD in it that included Avast v.4. After that, I've never paid for AV protection again. Since then, I've used either Avast or Avira and have yet to be infected by anything at all.

Comcast, which is my ISP provides Norton 360 free with their service. Comcast has used Norton for approximately 7 years now. In that time, I've had no issues with the Symantec software... works fine. However, if I had to pay for protection, I might consider using one of the free AV's with MBAM pro.
