Only Professional and higher have access to XP Mode, but you can still install VirtualPC in the home versions.

Is this what you are looking for?

Virtual PC itself will work, but not XP Mode, unless you supply your own CD. From there, just install the Integration Features.

Why If you want XP, Downgrade? Just use any Windows XP Home edition CD as it's the only one can be downgraded for Home Premium then phone Microsoft, Give them your 7 Home premium Product key. Where is yours? It should be on the packet of 7 home premium and be like this XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX and they will give you one for XP. Borrow a mates CD if you have to. and just install the cd and don't use thier product key. Only the one microsoft gives you.

Sorry but that won't work. :(

Unfortunately, Windows 7 Home Premium does not have the downgrade rights granted to Vista Professional.

Good thought though! ;)

Downgrade from homepremium to XP Home Edition or Create two partitions one 7 Home and other XP Home? you can still get XP Home Edition and XP Professional or XP Mediacenter Edition (Legal Versions of Ebay) or (legit ones of Newegg) at very good prices. Why do you want XP anyway?

The truth is you cannot get an XP license in exchange for a Windows 7 license.

He will need to either buy a copy of XP off of eBay or Newegg or someplace, or buy Windows 7 Professional and get access to a free virtual XP machine.

Sorry you are wrong!!!! I was a bit confused you can get Windows 7 Professional or ultimate and downgrade to Windows XP Professional. see this YouTube - Windows 7 Downgrade Tutorial Linus Tech Tips This also works with Enterprise aswell. It can also be done with Windows 7 Home premium to Windows XP Home Edition Only. I have done it at work and at home. bit more of a problem though Microsoft, They say it can't be done but with a bit of a struggle it can be done.

Maybe, but let's stay on topic.

There is no way to get XP for free unless you have the Professional or higher version.

I doubt trading in your Windows 7 license is advantageous at this point.

Let's make this downgrade thing clear.

This is official, valid information directly from Microsoft. Anything else is rumors and speculations:
Microsoft said:
Downgrade Rights for Windows 7 Desktop Software

Downgrade rights for Windows 7 are an end-user right, documented in the Software License Terms that customers accept upon first running Windows software.

Note that Windows 7 end user downgrade rights will be available for approximately 18 months after the general availability of Windows 7 (April, 2011) or the release of a Windows 7 Service Pack, whichever is earlier.

Customers must:
  • Purchase a PC preinstalled with Windows 7.
  • Accept the Windows 7 Software License Terms.
  • Perform the downgrade or authorize an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) to perform it.
See additional details and FAQ.

The Downgrade Process

Follow these steps to downgrade to a previous version of Windows:

Obtain genuine Windows XP Professional or Tablet PC Edition and a corresponding product key. The media should come from a prior legally licensed version from the OEM or Retail channels.

Additionally an end user, who is licensed separately through Microsoft Volume Licensing (VL) programs, may provide their VL media and key to their system builder to use to facilitate the downgrade on only their systems.

Insert Windows XP Professional or Tablet PC Edition media in the CD drive and follow the installation instructions.

Type the product key. If the software was previously activated, you won't be able to activate it online. In this case, the appropriate local Activation Support phone number will be displayed. Call the number and explain the circumstances.

Activate the software.

Not Virtual PC. He wanted to specifically use XP Mode, and he can't because he's on Home Premium.
