homegroup accessing another computer

i have Windows 7 64bit
in the past i had no problem with homegroup but recently i've had problems with sharing files. i see all of the other computers file ie library, music, etc but when i click on them they don't open, they don't do anything and the icons look all generic. the other computer can access my files fine and i can't, i can access other computers on my homegroup but not the computer w/ the generic icons

What OS is on the other pc ?- you may need to change the workgroup name to match that of the Homegroup PC. Have you looked in adanced settings in Network and sharing Centre (in control Panel) and enabled File sharing? Better also check to see its then enabled in the firewall(in control panel).

the other computer runs on the win 7 too. i've checked all the thing you said to check still doesn't work. my anti virus "AVG" doesn't pick up any virus. i tried disabling my firewall. it still doesn't work. i don't want to resort to reboot

Have you tryed restarting or shutting down both pc's - if that doesnt work I would try deleting both current networks (homegroups) and start again from scratch - you could also try updating drivers for the hardware concerned.

did not work and now when i tried creating a homegroup on the computer i can't connect to it and joining it, it said incorrect password when i try connect to it.

Click "start" then click the "help and suport" over to the right side, and type in homegroup - go through all relevant solutions, eg. how to change your password and the homegroup trouble shooter, if your still having problems post back.

You really need the network to work, so if homegroup doesnt work, and you havent changed anything, the same problem maybe there, and i know of no programmes to setup a network, but you could bing somthing like - "i need a programme to set up a network" - have you tried resetting the wireless router or whatever if you have one - bit of a long shot, well came to mind, but it may be wishful thinking though - just power it off for 3 minutes and then back on.

Join or create a workgroup : When you set up a network, Windows automatically creates a workgroup and gives it a name. You can join an existing workgroup on a network or create a new one.

In contrast, in this version of Windows you can create or join a homegroup, which automatically turns on file and printer sharing on home networks. Under Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings, click Change settings. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
In the System Properties dialog box, click the Computer Name tab, and then click Change.
In the Computer Name/Domain Changes dialog box, under Member of, click Workgroup, and then do one of the following:
To join an existing workgroup, type the name of the workgroup that you want to join, and then click OK.
To create a new workgroup, type the name of the workgroup that you want to create, and then click OK.

If your computer was a member of a domain before you joined the workgroup, it will be removed from the domain and your computer account on that domain will be disabled.
Notes
If your network includes computers running Windows XP, you might need to change the workgroup name on those computers to match the workgroup name on the computers running this version of Windows or Windows Vista so that you can see and connect to all computers on your network.
