Homegroup and sharing problem

Hello people,

I know this is just another topic on homegroup problems, but I did a search around the forum and could not find anything that looks like my kind of trouble, so here I am, asking for your help.

The situation is this: I have a desktop PC and a laptop, both running Windows 7. The Pc is wired-ly connected to a DLink router while the notebook uses wireless connection to the same network. What I did try was to set up a homegroup on the laptop in order to have something shared with the PC, but I could not get the PC to see anything of the shared libraries. What's strange is that I can see both computers in Network.

Both are using ESET Smart security and while testing, I tried turning off both computers' firewalls or setting them to Learning mode, but no prompts appeared so I could not allow the requested connection.

What bothers me more is that after 10-15 minutes, the computers stopped seeing each other and also, I could ping one to the other.

Does anyone have suggestions for me to try in order to solve the problem? I mean, homegroups are meant to make our lives easier, aren't they!

Homegroups is mostly for media sharing of large files...pictures, music and entire collections refered to as library's which are able to be shared easily from one computer to the other.

The thing is that you don't have to use it at all in order to share things.

If you plan on using homegroups you need to set it up on both computers and be sure and write down the password that Windows shows you for Homegroups.

For general sharing you don't need to use passwords unless you want the extra security "good idea".

If your PC is not seeing the laptop you just need to enable more settings "there are quite a few that need to be checked".

I'll just post a screen shot of a functional network shareing to show you what needs to be checked. For security you may want to turn off some of them when you aren't sharing, especially the public sharing one. You can also turn off the password protected sharing to make it easier to share but it will be less secure.

If chevy65's idea diesn't fix it there is always the: change from homegroup to workgroup. that also allows you to turn off IPv6.

Yes it seems that people believe you have to have Homegroups enabled in order to share but that is only to share entire library's.

That IPv6 used to give me problems but it seemed to fix itself in the newer builds. I think it's still causing problems with certain routers though.

Is the IPv6 only needed if you want Homegroups to work?

If this is the case (below). Try as WorkGroup. I don't use password protected unless on a public network.


Because Password Protected Sharing turned off, the security permissions have to be changed on the folder(s)
to allow Everyone access. Right-click the shared folder > Properties > Security Tab > Edit > Add and type
“Everyone” (not the quotes) into the box and select OK. Tick the boxes next to the permissions you want to
allow (e.g. Read or Write, etc.) then Apply > OK. Some messages may appear: “An error occurred while
applying…” This is not unusual and can be ignored by clicking Continue.

I am having the same problems as the original post, but I have all the sharing settings correct. I think OpenDNS is causing my problem. OpenDNS caused networking problems when I was testing Windows Home Server. The weird thing is OpenDNS settings are not on the router (Linksys) that my private network is behind, but on a Modem/Router (Verizon) downstream the Linksys Router. Is there a work around or setting that I can use to allow Homegroup to work while still using OpenDNS on my modem? Sorry that I don't have an answer, but could use the Help!!! Thanks in advance.
