Homegroup crashing computer...

Hi, I recently got Windows 7 Professional through MSDN-AA for my two computers (one 64-bit and one 32-bit license). They both installed fine and I'm really enjoying the O.S. so far - however, I have an issue. I very, very frequently transfer project files between the two computers (some of the visual files are pretty large) - so file sharing is important to me. I was excited when I learned about the Homegroup features and was eager to give them a shot.

No go :(

Both computers join the Homegroup fine, and can access one anothers shared folders. However, as soon as I try to actually transfer a file on the 64 bit computer (trying to transfer from the 64-bit to the 32-bit) the computer hard locks. No BSOD, but everything locks up (screen stays the same, caps-lock is non-responsive, mouse doesn't move). I have to hard-reboot to fix the issue.

I'm not having any other issues with the installation, except the Homegroup hard locking. Any thoughts/additional information requests?

Hey LV

Hi and welcome to sevenforums

Does the transfer only lock up one way or both ways? could you tell us more abt your computers and networking.

Specifically are both machines clean installs or upgrades, how much ram, cpu, wifi or wired, router, etc

thanks

Ken

Thanks for the prompt reply:

Both computers are fresh installs (I fist noticed the lockup while attempting to move some basic setup files, like dxwebsetup and win7codecs from one computer to the other).

There are two computers at play here:

Win7pro-64:
e8400 Core 2 Duo @ 3.00ghz
6 gigs of ram
Asus PK5 motherboard
ATi 4870 1GB video card
Fresh Install

Win7pro-32:
Pentium 4 @ 3.00 ghz (not overclocked)
Asus motherboard (forget the actual model number)
2 gigs of ram
nVidia 8800GTS320
Fresh Install

Both computers are on wired internet using a Linksys WRT54GS router.

-----

Scenario 1:
64-bit pushes file to 32-bit
---- 64-bit hard locks

Scenario 2:
64-bit pulls file from 32-bit
---- file transfers fine

Scenario 3:
32-bit pushes file to 64-bit
---- file transfers fine

Scenario 4:
32-bit pulls file from 64-bit
---- file transfers fine

------------------------------------------------

After experiencing the hard lock twice, one right after the other, an hour after finishing up the Windows 7 installs on both computers I stopped trying and removed them both from the Homegroup to prevent further crashes. I didn't want to screw anything up with the hard-locks. Just to double check that scenarios 2-4 were not crashing I went ahead, made a new homegroup, and attempted all four scenarios over.

I tried copying the exact same files I did last time, but this time around no hard locks in any scenario. Everything seemed to copy as expected. The only difference between then and now that I can think of is that the 64-bit computer (the one experiencing the hard locks before) now has TeraCopy installed, which is handling the transfers being pushed/pulled by that computer instead of explorer.

I'm hesitant to say that all is well now, still a bit worried to be getting any hard locks at all on such fresh installs.

I am also having a similar problem, I have two computer both wih fresh installs of windows 7 64bit. Bothe are set up to share files over homegroup, However when ever i try to transfer a file from one computer to the other using the other computer the computer the file originates from locks up completely nd disconnects from the network. Nothing respond not even the caps lock on the keyboard and I have to restart the whole computer?? There seems to be a fair few people having similar problems with the homegroup system Is windows working on it or has anyone else come across a solution??
