HomeGroup Icon from H***

Six months ago, I installed an HP pc for a friend and it has Windows 7 Home on it.
Today I went back for a tune-up and he was complaining about this "Home Group" icon on the desktop. It wasn't there six months ago when I first set up the PC.
It's not a shortcut and it cannot be moved to a different location on the screen, or moved into a folder or deleted.
It's not even shown in the Desktop icons folder.
He doesn't know when, how, why or where it came from but it's bugging him to death.

Without totally screwing up Win-7, is there an easy way to get rid of that Icon?

That thread was two pages of some very convoluted posts and I'm still not sure what actually got rid of the icon.
Can you give me the Readers Digest condensed version.

I have to put it in a form that I can email to my friend, so it has to be very straight forward.

How about the tutorial as the 1st post on the 1st page that shows you how to.

I found it....I got it....the .reg file is downloaded.
I use many .reg files for tweaking and tuning windows
so I'm no stranger to their use. I didn't know the solution
to the problem would be something so simple.

My sincere apologies for being such a pain.
