Homegroup issues with new pc, but problem seems to be with old desktop

hi all

I recently purchased a new sager laptop. I have been working on cleaning up duplicate files on my drives on my desktop so did not worry about my sager being on the homegroup.

So last week I decided to set up the sager on the home group. I discovered that I could not get the sager access to any other files on the network and also the desktop could not access the files on the sager. The exception to this was the public folder set of folders.

I changed all of the permissions (I think) to the proper settings on both computers and thought I was fine. I went to get into the homegroup today and ended up getting an error on the destkop that the home group could not be started. I went into the services program and discovered that all of the services for the homegroup were set to manual. I set them to automatic. I accidentally changed one of the services (peer network group) to local system. I am not sure what I was thinking. Anyway, when I try to change it back, it says that the password is not a valid password.
So we have a few issues to deal with.
1. I cannot figure out what the password would be for local service log on under the options for the peer networking group
2. Why are the permissions seemingly not working when the sager and desktop try to access each others files.

I would totally be fine with turning off the home group and restarting it if we can reset the associated services. Of note, the old laptop cannot even join the home group, which makes sense since the desktop was running it.

As long as PC and laptop see each other in network, the above info is unnecessary.

On laptop, make sure the network is set as Home/Private.

First, http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/236709-services-restore-default-services-windows-7-a.html download the reg file for Peer Networking Grouping and right click-merge it. Hopefully, it will reset the account too. You don't even need this service for Homegroup.

You will need the following as started for homegroup:
- Computer Browser
- DHCP Client
- DNS Client
- Network Connections
- Network Location Awareness
- Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
- Server
- TCP/IP Netbios helper
- Workstation
-- Start one by one if above doesn't help
- SSDP Discovery
- UPnP Device Host
- IPsec

Most of these should already be started, (in my homegroup I had to enable a few of the above manually to make auto-discovery work).

Also on your desktop go into Advanced Sharing Settings (Network and Sharing Center) and check the options:
- Turn on network discovery
- Turn on file and printer sharing
- Use 128-bit...
- Turn on password protected sharing
- Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections

I did all that and now
- both computers are in the homegroup
- both computers can see the other network resources like myditto

The only thing I cannot figure out (and I feel silly) is how to set the sharing username and password. I have no problem turning password sharing off but I guess better security is better

Well, if all is working now and you don't want password sharing you can disable it (on all machines I believe).
If not, you have to provide a user account that is set on the PC you are trying to access. (i.e., if you are trying to access laptop from desktop, then supply an account name/password that was set on the laptop. And vice versa.)

You shouldn't need an additional password when in a homegroup though, only password is the homegroup password which you already provided while joining it. Are you being asked one?

Looks like the laptop was not in the homegroup.
so back to that part,
it gives this error after I put in the password
"a homegroup cannot be set up on this computer"

Sorry I thought it had joined. That is why it was asking for a password.


I think the reason the myditto can be seen is that it is open on the whole network not just solely on the homegroup (which the desktop is).

One thing of note, when I merged the registry values it states not all elements could be merged as some were in use. Not sure if that matters.

Try merging in Safe Mode.

Hmm, the error makes me think you are trying to create a new homegroup on the laptop. No option to join one?

Also noticed that my list of services doesn't include homegroup ones, add to the list:
- Homegroup Listener
- Homegroup Provider

Make sure all services are running, check them again and if they fail to start - change startup type to automatic. Restart desktop and then the laptop after checking services.

Try Safe Mode, not with networking I thought it was the desktop, doesn't matter though. If still doesn't work, try stopping the service and merging. If that fail too, you can try a System Restore to a prior date to changing the service.

Busy week.
merging on the desktop in safe mode (no networking) gave the same error. the process was not started. not sure why.

the service issue seems to be on the desktop, which owns the home group. so there is no homegroup for the laptop to join. the service error seems to be preventing the home group.

Just make sure all the services specified in earlier posts are running and try again. If not, start the homegroup troubleshooter n desktop and see what comes up.

Check the services on the laptop too of course.

I get an error on the desktop that says it is a network issue.
I run the troubleshooter and it says to get support thru other means.
Not sure exactly what is up.

I will run it again tomorrow when home.

Tried one more thing before checking out the windows articles.

I ran the trouble shooter again on the desktop.
It told me to check for network problems.
It ran and "refreshed the home group."

I then left the home group on the desktop and created a new one.
Laptop joined it

So currently we are good.
It appears that I cannot get to the files thru the network I have to go thru homegroup, which is fine I can play around with it. will post when I have that working

desktop all of a sudden left the home group and is giving an error again. will look at those articles
