Say I have some documents on my home PC and I'm at school, how can I set my PC to share my files over the Internet so I can connect to it through my laptop at school? Is it possible to extend the HomeGroup sharing over the Internet?

There are easier and safer ways. You can use remote desktop, an app like team viewer, etc. Sharing over the internet can be dangerous.

TeamViewer looks like what I need (I can RDP but I don't want to load the GUI every time, just browse my files), thanks.

It has worked very well for me. I have it set up so I can log into my home computer from work or log into my work computer from home automatically. Then transfer any needed files. Best of luck. Just ask if you need any more help with it. :)

So I tried out TeamViewer and I can delete files on my Desktop remotely from my Laptop as well as transfer files from my laptop to my desktop but I can't transfer files from my desktop my laptop. I keep getting an error (5): access denied saying that the file on my desktop does not have write access.

Change the owner of the folder on your desktop, to include you.

What do you mean by that? I clicked on properties of my C drive, security tab, and changed the permissions to allow write access for users and authenticated users. But that still didn't work. I'm logged in as admin.

Or create a special folder on your C: drive called Transfers & set it as shared.

Yea you need to have it both computers. There's a unique ID for each TeamViewer installed and you connect with that ID.

Creating a new folder doesn't change anything. I still don't get write access. It's strange cause my laptop is set up the same way with the same sharing/security options but Laptop --> Desktop works.
