HI Guy's
i Have 2 copies of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit running. 1 on a desktop PC and the other on a laptop. They are both connect via a netgear switch and recieve internet via a sagaem sky router which also runs into the switch.

I cannot get the 2 to talk to each other for some reason and as a result when i try join the second PC to the home group all it wants to do it create a new group.

I cannot even get the option to join to show up. I have trawled the forums for a few hours and have tried numerous things including restarting the Peer networking in administraive tools to no avail.

Can someone help please?

Hi daz, Welcome to Sevenforums

first things to check is that the machines are both on the same subnet, have the same workgroup set, and that the networks type is set to a home network.

for homegroup you will also need IPv6 enabled

If you can run an ipconfig /all on both machines and copy and paste the results here that should be a good starting point for diagnostics

From this set-up I assume you have the desktop connected to a router and the laptop connected directly to an internet modem - or vice versa.

If you wish to file-share between the systems you will need to have the two IPs in the same range. Also the connection direct to the modem would default the network to a public type which will not allow a homegroup network

Can you please confirm the actual set-up?

The standard method to connect would be to connect the Internet modem to the input port of the Router and the both PC's to the normal router ports - this will allow the router to distribute the IP addresses to the both PC's Via DHCP and also distribute the Net connection. Once all the connections are correct the sharing should be automatic

If you do not have a router in the network then connection can be set to use internet connection sharing but this will require one of the systems to have two network connections

Thanks,
right here goes

I have a sageam SKY router that is solely connected to a netgear 8 port switch.

On the switch i have the following

Desktop PC running WIN 7
Laptop running Win 7
Imac running OSX
Dedicated work PC Running XP [ Ring fenced network over VPN - Uses internet connection only!]
Western Digital Share space NAS

that's it.

i currently run all devices off the switch and have a single Lan from the router.

Quote: I have a sageam SKY router that is solely connected to a netgear 8 port router.

As Barman already pointed out, when you use two routers in a system you will get two different default gateways, this will prevent sharing from working correctly. You need to take one of the routers out of the system and use a switch in place of the second router.

The netgear 8 port router needs to be a switch and not a router, unless you meant to say that the netgear 8 port is actually a switch? After that, just reset the router and it will reassign all machines an IP using the same default gateway.

Sorry Guy's
it's a typo..... It's a Netgear 8 port SWITCH not router as i have put. My mistake

OK I was wondering if you meant to say that. Resetting the router by pushing the reset button for 30 seconds with the router turned on should get your Ip assignments back to normal in that case.

I'm not sure where that rouge default gateway came from but that isn't right. After resetting the router, check your ipconfig to confirm that all machines are using the same default gateway which should be 192.168.0.1. It looks like your laptop somehow picked up an incorrect default gateway from the modem instead of the router somehow.

It would appear that somehow the PC and the Laptop are obtaining their IP from different DHCP servers.

If you can check the settings for IPv4 on both the laptop and the desktop - Both should be set to obtain settings automatically (Network and Sharing centre, adaptor settings), if they are on auto and ate still picking up the wrong information, switch the laptop to a manual setting, pick an IP from the range 192.168.0..... (something like 192.168.0.50 so that there should not be any conflicts with other devices), and set the gateway to be the address of the router not the sky device)

The reason for changing the Laptop rather than the desktop is that the 192.168.n.n range is more suitable for the Home type of network needed for homegroup sharing.

Also check the workgroup name on the laptop (computer, properties), this should be the same as the desktop.

Sorted.

I manually set the IP address as you suggested on the laptop. However it showed an error on the internet access. Therefore i reset it to auto and rebooted the 2 machines and the router again.. Everything zero's and the default gateway on the laptop reset to 192.168.0.1.

i now have a "Join Now" option on the home group and can get full access to all the drives.

Thanks for your help guy's. i am a happy bunny now.
