hook vhs player to computer to watch vid-tapes?

I have a combo dvd/video player. how can I hook it up to the computer to watch video tapes play real time on my monitor or even save them to the computer to record as dvd?

You need a tv capture card. It will (likely) have a composite Video In (the yellow RCA).
You'll also need some video recording/editing software that has input selection.

Haupaugge have some pretty good products, I'd recommend looking through their site for something that suits your needs.

some old home movie type things and some feature films like "amadeus" which of course would need stereo sound and ability to show it wide screen, not in some little box like youtube etc

Go to the FAQ tab and you'll see how easy it is to hook up. (Under "How do I add an S-Video or composite video source in the WinTV application?")

It cost me about $60.
