Hot for a high-end GPU?

I got a Radeon HD 6950 2GB. I have not overclocked or overvolted it. I haven't even got round flashing it yet
I just wondered...is 78°C OK? I know this card can reach 86°C...

That idle or load temps? If load then it is fine,

If it is idle temps, then you need to look at better cooling options.

No, this is when playing Bad Company 2 or Crysis 2. Games like those that are very intensive.

Hey MadSupra354, I have a MSI R6950 2GB my temps are 32C when idle and 65C while playing Bad Company 2 at full settings, I have unlocked the extra shaders, I am not using the 6970 bios, I just have the shaders unlocked and using the 11.5 drivers. The other thing I have is MSI Afterburner program installed this allows me to set limits on how fast the fan spins as it gets hotter. I noticed that if I leave this program off the card sits at 82C while in game, see if XFX has a fan speed program that you can load so when the card gets hotter the fan spins up, I know the fan can get very loud at 100% so I have it set to be 10 above what the chip is at so if the chip is at 40C fan speed is 50% so in game my fan runs at 75% if the card is at 65C.

I have a Diamond 5850 and it idles at 52c. In AMD Overdrive it says gpu is running at 99%. From what i can tell it doesn't do it all the time, I'll come down stairs and notice fans running loud sometimes, open overdrive and everything looks good except GPU stats. Well not sure how good/bad 52 at idle is but pretty damn sure it shouldn't be at 99% usage while i got nothing but FF 4 with 6 to 7 tabs open????

Any ideas?

There was a 99% load bug in older versions of Cat drivers - what version are you using?

And the 52 is temp... 99 was the load

Had PC off all night and now load is at zero and temp is 44

I believe ATI Cat are now on 11.4 I would try to update your drivers and see what happens.

This is what i've found on Diamonds website. Says version is 6.4 released Feb of 2010, I only got this 4 months ago so not sure if i wanna try this out or not.

If you turn up your fan while under load you can get that temp down quite a bit.

I've been running my XFX 6950 for about 4 months now. The first month I ran it flashed with the 6970 bios without issues. Temps were surely a bit hotter but I was able to easily compensate by turning up the fan speeds when the card was under load/gaming. After reading some posts about people developing issues with this over time, I went the same route as DarkXeno. I reset back to the original bios and then just unlocked the shaders instead. The card still performs great and I feel better knowing that I'm not stressing the hell out of it anymore. I still turn up the fan with CCC when gaming. I usually put the fan around 50 - 55 % and temps stay around 60c roughly.

Hmm that took me to driver version 8.851 (according to device manager that is)
It said 11.5 when i downloaded, though that could be because 11.5 was the entire catalyst software suite. It was released like last week so its still what i need. Thanks a million!!

Yea I hope. I'm pleasantly optimistic. Not surprised about it being related to browser, been having some weird issues since FF went to v4. Guess i'll search around here for a topic on that. So glad I got referred to this site. It's just the kinda resource i love.

remember that your gfx card sits inside your case.

if your case doesn't have adequate cooling, then all your components are going to run hotter.
