How about this 2T HDD for all of my media?

I need a new internal HDD for all of my media & want a 2T

This one seems to be a really good deal right now:

I dont think it lists the RPM's, but if its just my media HDD & I plan on running my OS on another 500g HDD, is this plenty of speed for me?

Hmm reading some reviews, I dont know about this drive... Seems it has limitations and a lot of failures... maybe it was a bad batch with newegg? Generally WD is good stuff...

Yeah I know there is a certain loss ratio, but still, 200g is F'n crazy!!

You're not "losing" anything. It's just a difference in the way the drive manufacturer's present the size as opposed to the real size in true Gigabytes.

It's not a big deal unless one is unaware of this fact. The drive manufacturers are counting on people to be in-cognizant of this information in order to trumpet their storage capacity as greater than what it really is.

Most of us know better.

As others have said, you are not actually losing space.

Consumers don't think in base 2 mathematics like a computer, rather we use the standard base 10 numbers. So, one megabyte equals 1,000,000 bytes while one gigabyte=1,000,000,000 and 1 terabyte=1,000,000,000,000. For computers, at base 2 mathematics, 1 megabyte is (1024kbx1024) 1,048,576. A gigabyte is (1024kbx1024x1024) = 1,073,741,824. A terabyte is (1024kbx1024x1024x1024) 1,099,511,627,726.

So, as you can see from above, the drive manufacturer sold the drive as 2TB...which would be 2,000,000,000,000 bytes using base 10 numbering for consumers (and that is exactly what you got). You weren't shorted, you get all of those bytes. All 2 trillion of them. The computer however reads 2TB as 2,199,023,255,552...so the difference Windows presents to you is 199,023,255,552...or what you are referring to as a 200GB loss. So, you can see here...you aren't losing space. The drive is, was and always will be a 2 billion byte drive (2,000,000,000,000).

With regards to 2TB drives....i'm not sold on them yet. It always seems like the large capacity drives have problems with quality issues and there are lots of failures. From what I can see on sites like NewEgg, it seems like the 2TB models from WD, Seagate, Samsung, Hitachi, etc all seem to suffer from far more failures than the 1TB models.

For me, I'm looking to get 2 large media drives for storing video from my HD camcorder, but I plan to get 2 x 1TB hard drives and just get a Thermaltake hard drive docking station and switch between the two of them.

Ok, but will I run into any issues of it being slow when accessing media all the time? I mean I'm always digging around my media drive using it, adding new stuff, playing, copying etc?

No you will have no problems with that drive, it's 7200 rpm like most drive's , if were me i'd partition it to make it more useable, just go for it

If you're going to be using it to serve media in a home network, you might want to consider going with the RE-4. It's expensive, but almost dead even with a 300 GB 10000 rpm velociraptor, and designed to be used 24-7
