Is there a 'best practice' that will explain migrating from a Gateway PC to an HP PC?

I have four Gateways that I want to migrate from which are running under Windows-7 Pro.

I would like to use the same Activation Numbers after migrating to Windows-7 Pro on the HP's.

The Gateways will be donated to the Salvation Army without an Operating System installed.

Depends.

If your Gateways are using oem SLP activation, then it depends where you are. In Europe and many other places, people use the keys from the stickers on the Gateway machines (sometimes those are batch keys and require ringing MS on the freephone activation line). Elsewhere, the rules might be different.

If the OS were purchased separately (retail), then that should be fine. Though you might still need to ring MS, if you get "product key already in use" message, doesn't happen often.


If your HPs already have 7 Pro licenses, that is different again, and should be doable. In that case , transfer the os, adjust to new hardware and use the HP pro keys to activate.
