There are OEM versions $150-180 [which marry its OS to one computer] and Microsoft blue-disk $200-300, which can be moved [but not copied] from computer to computer. Make sure retailer or computer store sells you what you want.

Windows 8 PRO is often eligible for a "downgrade" to Windows 7.

Windows 7 "Retail" is long discontinued and is not available in any retail store. In fact, there are no Win7 "retail" copies available anywhere in the world except private sellers who want $$$$$

You can find OEM/System Builder copies from NewEgg, or a retail store like Fry's that caters to computer builders.

Downgrades are usually only available at time of purchase of the machine itself, and require the media to be provided by the manufacturer - this would certainly cost extra if not provided at time of purchase (and may not be available at all).

Don't even think about installing x64 if you have less than 4GB RAM on your machine - and don't bother installing x86/32-bit if you have more ;)

My thoughts ?

Always install 64 bit on a 64 bit capable cpu, you can always add more memory :)

If you don't like Win 8.x because of the Start Screen, you could try Classic Shell.
It's free and you can make Win 8.x work and look very much like Win 7.

Hello, can someone please help. I currently have windows 8 Pro, however is there a way to install windows 7 for free?

There's a place to download Windows 7 ISO images legally (I think it's digitalriver Windows 7 download), google that or search it even here on the forums.

But you still need a serial key to install it. This is just the disk image which will only run as a time limited trial if you don't activate it with a serial.

I'm not sure about your Windows 8 Pro edition, but I believe in some cases, you can downgrade from Windows 8 to 7 for free. Try keying in your Windows 8 serial into the Windows 7 setup to see if it works. If it does, go ahead and format the drive right there. (You must remove win8 then). If it doesn't accept it, try contacting Microsoft support for downgrade options.

If you can downgrade, then that downloadable image might work for you. But you might need to get a special DVD media from Microsoft or your computer manufacturer. I'm not sure sorry.

If you don't have a free downgrade option, then follow gregrocker's post for good deals on buying Windows 7.

I really suggest you to switch to Windows 7, I think it's the best performance Windows ever. I don't like Windows 8. It's definitely fast, but so strange. I installed classic shell, that's good but there are still some strange strings. It requires you to go to the metro interface for so many things.

I hope windows 10 will be as good and as familiar as Windows 7. Oh and I heard it will be a free upgrade for EVERY windows 7 and 8 owner! Lucky us!

So if you can't downgrade for free AND don't want to spend money on it, then maybe you should wait for windows 10, I saw some screenshots (there's a free public test version), it's definitely not as terrible as windows 8. It looks kinda familiar and fast.

If you have Windows 8 Pro that came with the PC, it should offer a free downgrade to Windows 7 Pro. Contact the manufacturer's Tech Support.

If not then we regularly see Home Prem OEM for $89 and Pro OEM for $120 on Tiger Direct and NewEgg. I would watch both of those sites to be sure you're getting genuine.
