The settings options in ControlPanel > Sound are:

Playback: 1. AMD HDMI Output 2. Speakers 3. Realtek Digital Output

Recording: 1. Microphone (Logitech Fusion) 2. Microphone Realtek High Def Audio 3. Line In 4. Stereo Mix

Each of these can be enabled or disabled.

The only recording software I have is the Windows Sound Recorder.
What are the correct settings to direct the DVD output to the Sound Recorder ?

Get the free Audacity recorder. You can then record from "what you hear" (that must be set as default recording device). Play the DVD with whatever media player and record the sound at the same time with Audacity. Save the Audacity sound file as a .wav file.

Here is one link to download. Be aware of add-ons that may be with Audacity. Uncheck all the bloatware so all you get is Audacity.

The sound recorder only records wma. Audacity records as wav, then you can save in any format you want eg mp3. Also with Audacity you can check the levels as you record, and easily edit out the bits you don't need. Has many effects for eq, amplify, fade etc.

I get your point. But I can convert easily from wav to mp3 and I'm not planning anything else fancy. I have spent many unhappy hours UNinstalling various types of 'useful' free software which had horrible side effects, so to use Audacity I would have to spend time researching users' reviews first.
I don't think I should need to go there. Some combination of my existing Playback and Recording settings ought to do it, but I was hoping someone could give me a quick answer so that I don't have to experiment and risk messing up.
But thanks for trying.

I have a recording studio. If I wanted to, I could use Audacity for multi-track recording - its that good. Its the most popular free recording app on the internet.

The Windows Recorder, records but you have no control over it, you are at the mercy of the program.

But, as you have made up your mind, we are wasting out time trying to help you.

Get to know Audacity, great for any level of interest \ needs regarding recording\processing. Use as little or much of it as needed. Compared to it, Windows Sound Recorder is a dead duck. Scared of any installation files, Audacity portable is available.

Some years ago I used a pgm called Cool Edit Pro. I believe Adobe took it over, so it must have been good. I'd be very interested in contributors opinions versus Audacity. J
