Solved How can I save my computers state and load it at will?

As the title states. I'm looking to save state much like sleep or hibernate would. The exception being I want to be able to load it up using some form of GUI directly from my desktop (ie not having to restart). Is this possible and if so how?

Come on lads.

I know Windows makes a file each time you hibernate that contains the state of your system.

There must be a way to save these files for future execution.

I am not exactly sure what you are looking for, but would System Restore do what you need? You could also get an imaging program like Macrium Reflect FREE Edition - Information and download Both of these could be run automatically.

Sort of like a combination between a hibernate and a system restore. If I had 2 folders and 2 text documents open in a certain alignment on the desktop, I want those to be aligned the same way when I load up this "restore point"

Ideally it would not "restore" most system settings back to previous settings as I am mainly looking to quickly load up various applications/documents in the exact positions (x,y) they were in at a previous (saved) point in time.

However if the trade-off is that it will initiate a full system-restore AND achieve this, I can deal with that (ie save state every hour to prevent this from becoming a problem).

My understanding is that you want to save the hibernation file, then be able to reflash the RAM with that hibernation file.

This is not possible, and is technologically unfeasible. The contents of the RAM (and therefore the hibernation file) requires accurate knowledge of the system's current state. Over time the system is constantly changing, be it the OS's background maintenance or cache files being updated. Even if you don't do anything drastic such as run a software update, an older hibernation file would be inconsistent with the system's current state and you would encounter unpredictable errors; and most likely system crashes.
