The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) in USA, responsible of teaching US diplomatic staff foreign languages, have studied them to rank foreign languages according to how difficult they are to learn by a native English speaker.

Interesting list. Of my two native languages, Swedish seems to be one of the easiest and Finnish one of the most difficult to learn.

Of the European languages I have been exposed to I always thought that Hungarian must be very difficult - and Finnish is probably in the same league since it has the same origins.

I've played around with Google translate, typing in German/Russian phrases to see how well they translate into English. It seems to work OK, to a certain degree, provided you word the content as if you were talking to a young child, basically making it as simple as possible. Needless to say, some phrases still come out with strange/interesting translations.

I got myself in real trouble one day when I was trying to translate something into Norwegian.

A friendly Norwegian from Haugesund helped me correct it and we are still friend s :)
