Hi everyone,

I'm a bit confused. Currently I have windows xp and have a password protected log in. I am getting a new pc on Tuesday with Windows 7. Will I be changing the built-in admin. account? Or what will I need to do to activate an admin. password protection log in?

Hello Libralady, and welcome to Seven Forums.

During the installation of Windows 7, you will setup a administrator account by default. While setting up the administrator account during installation, you would just need to enter a password to have it password protecter and have to log on to it. You can see more on this in steps 11 and 12 in the tutorial below for how to install Windows 7.

Hope this helps,

Hi Shawn,

My new pc is coming Tuesday and HP already installed Windows 7 Professional for me. So where would I find that administrator account and will I be able to change the name and password it?

Thanks

Some OEM computers like this will have you setup your user account when you first turn it on. If not, then
most likely the user account they have will not have a password created for the account, but you can easily create a password for it. If they a user account already setup for you, then you cannot change it's name, but you can create a new administrator account and delete the old one from within the new one afterwards.
