Hi Rick,

To use the Personal Folders Backup add-in with Outlook 2010, follow these steps:
  1. Configure Outlook to allow the Personal Folders Backup add-in to run automatically on exit.
How to enable Personal Folders Backup add-in to work with Outlook 2010
  2. Start Outlook.
  3. On the Ribbon, click the Add-ins tab.
  4. Click the Backup button.
  5. Click Options and select the .pst files that you want to back up.
The Personal Folders Backup add-in can back up files to a disk. However, the add-in cannot spread the .pst file across multiple disks. When you change backup options, select a storage location that has sufficient free space to handle your whole .pst file.

Are you by any chance trying to save the backup into an external HD or pendrive?

If yes, my guess is that the drive you're saving to is formated in FAT32, which has a file size limitation of 4GB per file (no matter the total free space) and maybe it's causing your error.

Since most likely you have that external disk formated in FAT32, you can't simply copy more than 4GB in one file. This is a fundamental restriction of that filesystem, nothing to do with Outlook or with the procedure you use to do the copy.

The only real solution you have is to reformat that external drive using the NTFS filesystem, which can handle the large file. Other than that, you may split the file in smaller parts or try to compress it below 4GB (I don't like either one, but a quick workaround if you don't want to use NTFS).

Hi there
if you are running the 32 bit version of Outlook 2010 then download pfbkup.exe (outlook backup tool) from the ms site -- it says for 2002/2003/2007 but it works as well for 2010.

Download Outlook 2007/2003/2002 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup from Official Microsoft Download Center

to get the prompt working in outlook 2010

click on the telechargez in Pfbackup avec Outlook 2010 | RémyLarrieu.com

(it's in French but the meaning should be obvious).

I'm afraid if you are using the 64 bit version of outlook you are out of luck though.

Cheers

Cant you just find the outlook data file (user>documents>outlook>) and drag it straight to your usb stick?
Thats all i done, then installed outlook on the new pc and put the file back.
Just set up the email address, pointed to the file and job done.

But neither of both things will help in bypassing the inherent limitations of the FAT32 filesystem of the backup media. The OP already confirmed that, and that was the problem that prevented him to write more than 4GB of data in a single file. He was able to extract a backup copy of his mails, but the HD filesystem was rejecting it.
