Solved How do I change the Sndvol.exe Icon in System32?

I've been customizing my Windows 7 theme to look like Windows 95/98 for nostalgia, and have been changing the icons back to the Windows 98 icons. I have changed all the icons I can think of, including My computer, the trash bin, the folder icon, the hard drive icon, the CD-ROM drive icon and so on.

I'm down to the last icon I want to change, and thats the Volume Mixer icon. I have the Windows 98 Volume Mixer icon (the yellow speaker). I have changed the sound icon from control panel using this tutorial from the same forum. Now, I'm trying to figure out how to change the icon in the system32 folder so it will show the yellow speaker as the programs default icon. How can I do this?

With 64 bit you will need to change the icons in the SndVol.exe in both C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64
Then:

Just to be sure I will get the desired outcome before I start messing around with Resource Hacker, I'm posting a picture below to make sure Resource Hacker can do this icon change. The red squares are the icons I want changed, and the blue square is what I want the icons to look like.

Is it possible for Resource Hacker, or any program for that matter, to change those two icons to the original yellow speaker?

OK that is icon #100 in mmsys.cpl that will change it on both the open sound property window and the taskbar icon.
With 64 bit you will need to change the icons in the mmsys.cpl in both C:\Windows\System32 and C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Any resource hacker should be able to do it.
Do you already have the yellow speaker icon?

Okay cool, thank you Bongo. I have the yellow speaker icon. I've already changed the Control Panel sound icon to the yellow speaker, but these particular icons are the hardest to change that I've come by so far. The other icons I've changed were done with simple registry tweaks. This will be the first time I use Resource Hacker, so I'm just making sure I don't brake anything. So I just follow the tutorial from your first post and edit the mmsys.cpl file with Resource Hacker?

Yes, then follow the rest I posted up there about taking ownership giving yourself permission and renaming and replacing a system file.
