How do I change the video output from my laptop

Hi Everyone,
I was not sure where to post this thread.
Here's the thing, I have a HP Pavilion DV6 and I want to display video on a Panasonic TAU T.V.
My laptop has both VGA and HDMI video outputs and the TV has an RCA port.
I bought an HDMI to RCA cable and Plugged both ends to the right places but, no image is displayed.

I have read that i need to change the screen resolution but I don't know what else I require.

Is the panasonic recognized if you go to your display settings?

Is the RCA port the only input for the Panasonic TV?

When you go to control panel/display, what options are available, not just screen resolution, but also number of screens?

Is the video a high-definition disc or a standard video file? The TV must be compliant for high-definition.

Well there is the port for receiving cable TV.
No, it is not for HD.
I guess that could be a problem, but the other way was buying a VGA cable and other things which could make things harder.

Your TV (model# ?) might receive 720 horizontal lines through a separate digital tuner and the coaxial cable, if it is HD-ready. But the RCA ports are limited to 480 lines. That's hardly useable. Despite the screen size, there's no real estate.

The TV is a Panasonic Tau Series 27" PureFlat TV.

So what I understand is that the cable I bought is useless for watching my desktop activity on the TV.

What would be the best way to achieve my goal?
Use the VGA port?

At the moment I don't plan to buy a HDTV.
