My CPU is overheating when gaming, so I need a new cooling system, but how do I find one that matches on my motherboard and fits + cools enough on my CPU ?

my CPU : Intel Core i7 870 @ 2.93GHz (Lynnfield)
my Motherboard : Intel Corporation DH55TC (XU1)

Your MB is a LGA1156 socket so you'll need to find a cooler with the correct brackets and whether you wish to use air or water to cool it is up to you. You'll find many solutions and many types of both systems so it's really a matter of how much you wish to spend and water in general will give you better cooling

Will any Cooler that fits the LGA1156 socket do? Im afraid of getting a too weak one and that it does not fix my cooling issues then

Yes any cooler that fits it will do but you'd want something better than what you currently have so it still depends on your budget and the more you spend the better hardware you'll usually get. It's worthwhile doing some research online once you decide which one is within your budget and see what others say about the performance of the cooler. I could list 100's of coolers but without knowing how much you wish to spend it's a waste of time

yeah, I also need to learn how to do it, so that next time I can do it with out having to ask for help :) I recently got that Amd R9 270 series gfx card, its right below my CPU and the heat from the gfx card overheats my CPU.. so im thinking of changing the cooler on the CPU might be wasted after all ?

A better cooler is always worth it and you can always add extra fans to your system if it gets too hot unless you're already at full capacity in which case a better case can help. You'll find many tutorials on YouTube showing step by step how to change a cooler for most motherboards and it's not that difficult as long as you take the necessary precautions such as disconnecting the power cable from the computer and discharging any current in the system by pressing the power button for approx 30 secs after disconnecting the cable as well as earthing yourself while working on the motherboard

@shimshom re Dark Rock

I've got a Dark Rock cooler on an o/c 2600K, and while it's a efficient cooler, it's a massive bit of kit - too tall for a standard case (I have an Antec 300 for that pc). Also, depending on the mobo, it can cover some of the RAM, making routine maintenance a hassle. The weight of the DR means you have to be careful during installation as well. I now use a Seidon 120V water cooler on my new builds - still needs a large-ish case for the 120mm rad/fan.

If the OP is not overclocking, maybe he just needs new thermal paste.

Cooler Master: Seidon 120V

jimkromann I would like to help you but I need more information.

***Fill in your System Specs completely.
Look at my System Specs in lower left of this post and it should give you a idea how to fill them in.

***Other than your complete specs I will need to know what you are going to use the computer for.
***How much money you are willing and able to spend.

All computer cooling starts with the case (tower) and it's ability to circulate air and remove hot air.

What programs are you monitoring your cpu and gpu temps?

I have a self built water cooling system. If the case was unable to remove the hot air it would of been a waste of money. Plus I would have a heat problem with the cpu, gpu, motherboard ect.

If you supply the needed information I will be happy to give guidance.
