Had a similar issue with a Sony Vaio some time ago. It was a windows update that disabled the ambient light sensor of the laptop. That caused the screen to go very dim & I was not able to adjust it until I removed & hid that update. Don't recall which update it was, but I'll see if I can find it & let you know.

OK found my notes from when I fixed that Vaio with dim screen. No guarantee that your issue is exactly the same, but here is what I recorded about the dim screen problem. "Got online & find that Intel came up with updated video drivers that don’t work with Sony’s autodim function. Installed older driver, hid the Intel update & working great, just can’t dim/brighten using Function keys". I do recall that it was a recommended update from Microsoft that caused the problem.

Sorry, I don't recall, but you might try to roll back the graphics(display) driver. Also, see what version of the display driver is available from Sony support.

Is the problem that the screen is really too dim, or just that you cannot adjust it? Also, boot into SAFE mode. If the brightness appears adequate in safe mode, then the problem is a driver issue - most likely the display driver.

Holmes is probably on the right track. download the drivers for your graphics card from VAIO website, boot in safe mode, uninstall your graphics drivers, reboot to normal mode and see if installing the vaio driver solves the issue .
