How do I force my XP Mode virtual machine to shut down?

Hey all,

I'm having some trouble with my XP Mode virtual machine; I tried installing an application from an image located outside the virtual drive, which caused a very slow file transfer. The entire emulated desktop froze, and I was forced to terminate the emulation. Unfortunately, Windows 7 managed to send the emulated Windows XP into hibernation so every time I start XP Mode, the entire application freezes, and my HDD usage jumps to 100%. How can I reset the virtual machine or force it to shut down from outside the emulation environment?

I don't think you can shut down the virtual machine outside of it.

You will have to go and start it up and then shut it down...sorry..
But you can change the default action when you close it or have it let you choose what action you want to do.

By going to your start button (circle).
and type in Virtual PC


and then click on the Program and then also click on your Windows XP Mode, then click settings.


A window will pop up and go all the way down to Close section. and click the radio button Prompt for action.


After you have done that Try this by starting your Windows XP Mode when it starts click the close button and choose shut down. See if that works..

And you could also just uninstall the virtual machine by going into control panel and then go under Programs click uninstall a program. Then you will have to reinstall it..

EDIT: You could also just have it shutdown instead of Hibernate when you click the Close button on the Virtual Machine. Just click Automactly Close with the following action button and chose Shut Down.

Actually, shut down didn't do anything - literally; it just kept being stuck. However, "Turn off" appeared to be exactly what I needed: It simply "cut the power" to the virtual machine. XP started up with no problems afterward and is running perfectly now.

Damn... It seems the visualization isn't exactly flawless; whenever I run the program (Kane and Lynch: Dead Men, a video game from Eidos), I get the following error:
"This game does not work on a remote desktop connection."
How does applications in the emulated environment know of its synthetic circumstances, and how can I prevent this?

Hey everyone,
I was facing the same problem but I couldnt shut down the XP Mode machine from the action menu, or from Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

Looked as some other forums and saw the same posts saying to go into VM settings and change the close out procedure form hibernate to shut down.
No Joy
tried running the kill commands from the command prompt. Guess what.... cant open CMD while machine is shutting down.

Then I noticed another option in the VM settings. On Exit "Power Off"
Thats like pulling the power cord out of the stupid machines virtual backside!
Took it right down.


Hope that helps the next person that would have lost a few hours to this silly problem.
