how do i get a windows.old when i re install windows?

I am about to re install windows on my computer, but i am unable to copy everything over to a secondary hard drive. What option do i pick to re install windows and keep all the files currently on that drive?

What you want is a repair install,

It's always a good idea to back up what you want to keep, why can't you do that?

To do a repair install you need to be able to do it from the desktop, can you boot to the desktop of that computer?
