Hi,

I just bought a new computer, i7 860 and have put 7 x64 on it.

my motherboard is ausus p7p55d and has one ide socket on the board.

I was using this socket for my cd and dvd drives but I have detached them so I can plug in my old IDE hard drive.

I was using the IDE drive just 2 days ago in my old system.

Sometimes when I boot up the drive is seen and sometimes not.

when the drive is seen I try and copy some files over to my new sata drive I have in the new system. some of the files copy over but the the IDE drive always gets stuck. when I try to cancel the copy windows stops responding partially and I cant get out of the copy window and the old IDE hard drive explorer window.

So I restart windows and normally it now doesn't see the IDE drive.

What is going wrong?
How do I get my files off this hard drive???

Thanks,

Duncan.

ps. this forum is great. I'm very pleased it exsists!!!

Try using Teracopy to copy the files off your disk. No guarantees it will work, just a thought.

Check IDE cable connections at both ends.

Try another IDE cable.

Is the drive jumpered correctly?

Is the IDE drive always seen in BIOS?

When you copy, it may help to select only a bit at a time, rather than the entire drive at once. Drag and drop should work, but maybe not as quickly as you would like. The more important question is why is the drive visible only intermittently.

You can transfer files other ways (cable, DVD, USB drive, etc), but they all depend on the IDE drive being usable.

Another simple way is buy a external IDE to USB case. That way not only can you get the old files off, but you can also use it as a possible backup device.

If the IDE drive is not healthy, that will not work any more than his current method.

thanks Jonathan_King I will try terra copy.

You can transfer files other ways (cable, DVD, USB drive, etc), but they all depend on the IDE drive being usable.

The drive is currently set as master and it is the only drive on the IDE cable, is that correct?

I have tried several IDE cables and they are all acting the same.

The drive is intermittent in the bios/start up. I think only sata drives show up actually in bios. but there is a start up screen that says if the drive is found by JMicron.

Another simple way is buy a external IDE to USB case. That way not only can you get the old files off, but you can also use it as a possible backup device.

I have an IDE/SATA to usb bought from Maplin but windows doesn't recognise the device when I plug it into the usb socket (I have tried multiple usb sockets)

I'll try and get the drive to show again and then try terra copy.

Thanks for everybodys' help!

It certainly sounds like a drive issue. Course, all the IDE drives are getting older, now that SATA is mainstream.

Uh, oh. JMicron. I cursed them for months when I had an Asus motherboard.

Good luck.

Considering that JMicron is cuckoo, I'd try slave, other ID ports, anything else I could think of.

I am guessing it is not a jumper issue, if it detects the drive at all.

You're probably right... I had some old Maxtors that did weird stuff when jumped as a slave without an actual slave on the channel...

BINGO!!!!!!

Should have tried it earlier!!!!

I was using the power supply that came with the IDE to USB device i have for convenience as the leads from the power supply in the case are all nicely tied in a bundle and this IDE drive is outside my case.

Now that I have plugged it into a propper power supply it is totally okay.

I've installed teracopy also and it is being used although i don't think it is needed anymore tbh but good to have all the same.

This really should have dawned on me earlier.

Thanks again for everyones help!!
