im needing to backup some applications, it would make things a whole lot easier when reinstalling windows. isnt there an application where i can either point it to the main executable of a program, or its shortcut in teh start menu and this program will read into the uninstall and grab all the registry data into a file, so that i can save this info along with the directory of teh application itself?

This way i can cut and paste the app over to the new location (another operating system of the same type) then run this application that will spit the registry entries in for the app. Then i can create a shortcut and when i run it i dont want it to complain about any registry problems, etc...

I thought since the titles were close, it would cause others to read both posts, but i didnt expect for somebody to actually think it was a double post after comprehending the titles for each. i know im bad sometimes at titling, but i did put some effort into the two so they could be readily decipherable.

first topic is about migrating windows, the 2nd post is about looking for an application specifically for backup up the registry of an application.

pickme app MIGHT be sort of what i was thinking. i remember back in the day i used norton clean sweel, and this program was cool. It was for win98. The thing i liked about it the most is when you wanted to uninstall a program, all you would have to do is find a shortcut, right click on it, and look in the cleen sweep options for uninstall. This was awesome at removing those programs that either dont like to uninstall, uninstall is broken or missing. I was hoping to find something that easy for backing up programs.

Assuming something like this would be possible, it seems would be worth it to try and whatever app it cant seem to handle, then manually installing only those, rather than having to reinstall and configure potentially scores of apps after a rebuild.

I remember the good old days when Applications ran in their own folders that also contained relevant configuration and *INI files.
Easy to know where to find the INI files.
Much more difficult to find the registry keys in Win 7.
Even the application developers cannot find and remove all of them when a clean install is needed.

When I moved across to Windows 7, I had learnt the lessons from my trials and errors during several years of installing apps on Windows XP so I did completely new installs of the apps on Windows 7. Never looked back.

Actually ... there USED to be an app that would make migrating apps from PC to PC a very simple process.

It went by the name of Alohabob PC Relocator -- and it worked quite well. I know because I used it to "upgrade" several machines back in the Windows XP days.

It worked so well, in fact, that Microsoft bought them out. MS renamed the app to Windows Easy Transfer Companion (effectively taking Alohabob OFF the market!). MS made it available as a free download.

But shortly thereafter, MS pulled the download links. So, BOTH of these are unavailable anymore. Even if you did find an old version of Alohabob from some Internet site, it won't do you any good because it required online activation to use it, and when MS bought it, the original vendor shutdown the activation servers.

Laplink has a product that claims to be able to migrate apps from XP to Win7. So, it might be able to do what you want -- back up the apps to some storage media, such that they can be restored later. But, you would have to check this out to see if it actually works, and no, their app is not free.

well, it was only a few applications that i wanted to backup actually. after some research i see that this install was FRESh 4 months ago. I just dont want to have to reconfigure a few of the adobe apps i have(dreamweaver, flash, and more, re-register them, and my other IDe (NuSphere's PHP Ed) as far as the apps go. Im trying to trim down the 8 hours of configuration usually needed to get a good system going by a couple hours if possible.
