How do I install a downloaded 64-bit version?

Here's the thing, I hope someone can help me: My laptop runs Vista 32-bit, but is 64-bit capable, and meets all the Windows 7 64-bit requirements. I bought Windows 7 64-bit Professional at http://windows7.digitalriver.com. How do I get this version to install correctly?

The download went well, no problems, creates a file called "Win7-P-Retail-en-us-x64". Running that file creates a folder called "expandedSetup", but also gives me an error message that reads folders could not be created, and I should make sure that read-only was deactivated.

Trying to run "setup.exe" from the folder "extendedSetup" creates an error message that says there is a compatibility issue, and I should make sure that I have the correct version.

I tried running this first from the desktop. Does not work, makes sense. Then I tried external hard drives, and again from a different partition of the laptop hard drive. It still gives the same error messages.

I understood that if I ran a Vista 32 version, I could make a custom/clean installation of Windows 7 64-bit.

What am I doing wrong?

You really can't run a 64 bit program from a 32 bit OS. You will probably need to make some type of bootable media you can use to boot and install from there. Are there not instructions on Digital River about this?

There are some tutorials here to tell you how to make bootable DVDs and Flash drives which could be used to install. Someone on another forum suggested using a bootable flash drive which was easier for him. I will look to see if there is anyway do download a bootable x64 live cd that could be used to start the install.

There have been comments about problems with unuseable downloads from Digital River, but we have no way of knowing if your download is good or not, unless Digital River gave you a way to check it.

I have been assuming you do not really have a bootable DVD. You might try pressing F12 during the boot to force it, then select boot from DVD.

There are instructions online, but they do not touch on my problem. I just found a thread here that explains how to create a bootable ISO from student d/l, and am now trying to do that.

Thanks for your comment, though. That explains one of the problems I had.

Hey there KaDaeHa, just giving you a head up. Sorry for the bad news but you might run into trouble. I'm in the same boat as you. I had a 32bit vista machine and i wanted to upgrade it to 64bit. Like you said, you can't just download the software from digitalriver and install it. It won't let you and it gives you the error. So what you have to do is create the iso file and boot it from disc.
You got all that info already, now for the bad news.

Once you boot into the windows 7 disc it'll install just fine. However when it comes to the activation code it'll say it's not valid. So the problem is that the digitalriver download is for upgrade, or some bull like that. So if you format your hard drive, (which you most likely will going from 32bit to a custom 64bit like myself) for some reason the product key comes up as invalid.

Sorry for pointing you to another thread, but here's where i found the answer. Good luck with it, just trying to help a fellow 32 to 64 buddy.
