How do I password protect a folder/file?

Solved... for now.

Folder Protect - Password Protect Folders,Lock USB,Lock Folders in seconds

The software above does as close as seems possible to what the thread starter (and I) wanted. The software costs $30 USD after the trial, but I'm not sure yet if it behaves like WinRar in that you never actually have to pay for it. I'll try to remember to come back here once my trial ends (although I'm not sure how long that will be...)

Be sure to read on how to use the .exe before jumping into protecting stuff though. It doesn't act like any other program I've seen.

Well I found a freeware, Easy File Locker. Does my work to some extent. I can protect files as well as folders and keep them visible too, exactly what I wanted. Even when they are visible (not accessible), one cannot delete/move them, good! And when you click on them, you get a message of access denied.

This is what I wanted. Just wish that instead of access denied message it would ask me for the password. Is there any app which can do it?

Has anyone suggested to you TrueCrypt?

I am entering this discussion as my problem is puzzling and I think relevant.

I ALREADY have a USB stick I use for passwords, and on that stick I have a folder containing a file with an obscure title which has a PASSWORD. I have been using this for a couple of years at least but I cannot remember how I set it up. it is very simple.
I open the USB stick, find the folder and file and open it - it asks for my password and wont open until I enter it.

I don`t understand how I set this up if it is not supposed to be possible.

You can use the USB stick on any machine and still access your password protected files.

Whatever you used to create your original password protected file - well you will just have to remember how you did it!

Currently for single files and folders I use: EncryptOnClick

It only works if the software is installed on the machine being used.

EDIT: Manufacturer states that EncryptOnClick can be used on a USB key. I've never used it on USB. It's installed in 32bit Program Files. I have no idea how to run it from USB.

I discovered how I did it ! I used Microsoft Office. Open the file - click on File - info - top left of page click on Protect Document -

click on Encrypt with Password. Everything then depends on the strength of the password of course but I only open the document when I access the USB stick. Being a private home user, this is much safer than having them on the computer. The password for
the file is not written down and only known to self and close family in case they need it if I am ill (getting very old !)_
