How do I replace explorerframes.dll on my 64 bit computer?

I would like to use this custom theme: Kombo by kiko11 on deviantART but in order to do so I have to replace explorerframes.dll with the custom one, and that's where I'm running into trouble.

Because I have 64 bit (on windows 7), I'm supposed to replace explorerframes.dll in both system32 and sysWOW64 (?).

When I do this, I rename the original in both folders to explorerframes.old, then I drag and drop the custom explorerframes from the folder the author has titled explorerframes 64bit into sysWOW64, and the custom explorerframes from the folder titled explorerframes 32bit into system32.

However, after I've done this, restarted, and logged back in, the screen is completely black and I have to go into the activity manager and restore both original explorerframes files in order for anything to work properly.

Since it's a custom theme there might be more problems than usual ...Help...

Welcome to Sevenforums.

You might use Uxtheme patcher file for x64bit OSes. It is a much safer option than messing up important system files.

Just unselect the option to make the windowsxlive.net your homepage

Be very careful while using a patch like this though. Always make a restore point. In the zip file, there are two files. Click on the 9.0 version program. If you'd like to restore the effects of the patch, open the program again and click restore.

Try registering the dll's

I reckon that you might need to register the files using regsvr32 before they'll work. I'm not an expert on this so maybe another forum member could explain how to do it. I tend to use third party software to register dll's rather than from the command prompt.

The explorerframes.dll in the 32-bit folder goes in C:\Windows\SysWOW64 and no one in the 64-bit folder goes in C:\Windows\System32 (a good way to tell is to look at the size of the file they should be very close to the original size) I know it sounds very confusing but 64-bit files go in the system32 folder(on a 64-bit system).
