How do I retrieve lost data after how "technician" treated BSOD

Hallo! I recently got a blue screen just after start up with a message about a "bad spool header".
My brother, an amateur computer technician, tried repairing it by making a backup and reloading windows, before reloading my programs. (After I told him to leave well enough alone, and not to do anything that drastic!)
For some reason, his back up did not work and he say when he try to reload my old Samsung backup (2 months old) via Samsung recovery, the computer gets the same error again.
So, I want advice with two problems:
1) What program to use to get back my recently created music, word and picture files. (I know, such a program should be loaded on my backup drive).
2) My backup contains a 3 month old Windows image backup too, except for the 2 month old files backup. Would the image backup restore the programs I had at the time, and can I then put, on top of that, the files that are newer than the 3 month old image backup?

In what order do I now go about retrieving data and then creating a computer that do not give a "bad spool header" message after start up?

I don't. As Windows was reloaded, I probably cannot get it now.

If I want to retrieve the data I can from the newly loaded C drive, should I not look for that first, before worrying about a problem that did not appear since reloading?

If you have an image, you can attach the VHD via Disk Management > Action tab. The image then appears in Computer as a virtual volume from where you can copy any file you like.

I was perhaps not clear enough where I have to retrieve data from. The data I need to recover first was on the C drive before Windows was reloaded. I need to recover as much as possible of that before reloading anything extra onto said C drive, thus overwriting more data.
As for the backups on the external drive, there is a 2 month old file backup (but I need my more recent files from the C drive first!); and a 3 month old Image backup.

If you installed a new system over your old C, then there is little hope you can recover files. But you can always try Recuva. That is the best free program I know.

Download Recuva 1.49.1019 - FileHippo.com
