I recently bought a new graphics card, the 960 STRIX, but I noticed I wasn't getting the performance I should. A quick test showed that the reason why was my okay-tier processor, the Intel i5-3470. However, the reason it was throttling so badly was because all the work was all on one of my four cores.

I had maybe 20%-30% on cores 0, 1, and 3, but core 2 had 98%-100% while playing Far Cry 3 at max.

I was wondering if it was possible to split the load up between all 4 of the cores and maybe play my games at a solid 60FPS.

Thanks!

How do I spread a workload over multiple cores?

That isn't really something you have control over. A CPU may have 2, 4, or more cores but how much this will benefit performance is largely up to the applications you run. It appears that the game is essentially single threaded. The thread running on core 2 is doing most of the work. There are other threads but they don't have very much to do. It is not possible for one thread to run on multiple cores at the same time. For best performance the scheduler will try to run that thread on the same core whenever possible. It will spread this over multiple cores if necessary but this would harm performance.

Okay, thanks. I didn't think it was something I could do, but I was hoping I was wrong.

thanks anyways!
