So whenever any user on my pc deletes a shortcut, the other users lose it as well. I don't know if the desktops are somehow synced between the users, but is there anyway to fix this other than deleting the icons and then re-adding them for each user that wants it, and is there any other such between-user syncing I should be aware of?

The between user syncing is "Public" in the Users directory. Of course that is why it is getting deleted by the other users.

C:\Users\Public\Desktop

It could be these programs are installed for all users.
To avoid changes by one user propagating to another you will likely need to install just for that user.

Some of the directories under Public is hidden. In order to browse Desktop, you must type the path directly into Explorer's address bar.

Thanks I can now see a few icons, I'm guessing the others were there before, they're just deleted now. How in the future can I get icons to not go public?

I believe you will have to install each program in each user account. Then user a cannot delete icons on user b's desktop.

You can simply copy the shortcut to each user account desktop folder from an admin account

Unfortunately it's the installer's decision. Each time after installing software, you're going to have to jump into Public's Desktop directory and handle those icons manually.

You can set up permissions to deny installers from placing any thing in there. But I don't recommend it. And, mind you, you're going to have to deny yourself at the same time.

OK, well if there's no way to do it without manually moving each icon then the case is solved, thanks very much guys
