How do I unassociate a file type?

Hello, I am having trouble with running batch files. When I try to run them they open a cmd window, but the commands are no executed. I am not the administrator on my computer so I can't edit the the registry, and the IT department is refusing to edit the registries themselves. So does anyone have a different way to unassociate the bat extension

Hi Neutrino, welcome to the Seven Forums.

I have some difficulties to understand your question? The batch file extension .bat is automatically associated with command prompt (cmd.exe) because all commands in a batch file are run from command prompt. That's the function of a batch file, run Windows (DOS) commands from command line.

"Unassociating" .bat extension means your batch (of commands) can not be run.

A totally different thing is that your IT department of course has reasons why you as a user are not allowed to perform administrative tasks on your company owned work PC, and why they refuse to do the changes individual users want to. Here at the Seven Forums we do not like to assist in "cracking" the protection measures an enterprise IT department has put on the computers owned by that enterprise.

Filling this out, at least partially, will save a lot of time. Another advantage is when posting a new problem, the person answering can just click the My System Specs link in the bottom of your post. No need to search for the information.

If you have multiple systems just indicate that in the System Specs so that we know why many of the fields are blank.

Why not post a .bat file you are trying to run? Pick the simplest one. Not some 250 line batch file that calls 12 other batch files, if you know what I mean.

Or, put another way, if you type a command that's used in a batch, into the command prompt manually, does it work then? "Does not execute" is kind of vague. Is there an error message?

Could you please explain how does this help OP to run batch files? Only thing that happens after unassociating when a batch file is run is this:



If OP wants / needs to run batch files they should remain associated with cmd.exe.
