Did the store where you bought your computer give you a coupon for getting the Windows 7 retail? If not, you would need to buy the Win 7 Upgrade disk which goes for about $100.

It was bought from an independent dealer, so no. Does the upgrade disk work for the Windows 7 RC? When I was at the store, all the boxes I saw had upgrade from Vista in the top corner... will this work for me?

How is installing windows 7 Home from RC 7100 downgrading? Can I do a clean install if I purchase Windows 7 Home (the one that says Upgrade from Vista in the corner)? I'm not worried about losing my files, I just want to get a full version of Windows 7 working.

It's always best to clean install. MS allows this with the Upgrade version even if qualifying OS is not installed, as long as you have XP/Vista on hand to qualify.

As this blog from a Win7 developer discusses, it is not recommended to in-place Upgrade RC: Harold Wong's Blog Site : Can I do an In-Place upgrade from Windows 7 Release Candidate To Release Code??

However growing numbers have tried it and it works with no performance hit, largely thanks to this popular workaround.

Note the special steps at the end for RC.

That should work. Just follow the tutorials here at Seven Forums for the correct way ;)

Thanks. I'll get Windows 7 Home Upgrade tomorrow and post back in this thread.

Is there only Upgrade editions? Why doesn't Windows release a version to install from scratch.

Are the non upgrade ones more expensive? Why don't people just use those.

They do cost more.
And most tech knowledgeable people do use them, since upgrades can cause performance issues.

Is there only Upgrade editions? Why doesn't Windows release a version to install from scratch.

I think you are confusing the in-place upgrade which keeps your programs, files and settings in place while installing the New OS, with the Upgrade version of Windows 7 which can do that but also can be clean installed from scratch.

MS wanted to make it easier for 6 million beta testers many of whom had gotten rid of their XP/Vista after trying Win7, so they allow Win7 Upgrade version to be installed over the RC, or even if no OS is on the HD. Here's how: http://community.winsupersite.com/b...-windows-7-with-upgrade-media-the-answer.aspx

So the only reason not to get an Upgrade version is if you don't have a qualifying copy of XP/Vista on hand since that would violate the EULA, although MS only uses the honor system so far.

This is too confusing for my miniscule and pathetic brain.

I've got Windows Evaulation Copy Build 7100. I don't have XP or Vista on this machine. If I purchase Windows 7 Home from a store will I be able to install it on my machine without any major problems. This one:

http://windows7news.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/Windows-7-Home-Premium-400x400.jpg

I purchased the wrong edition today. It was called Windows 7 Starter Upgrade. So I'm going to take it back tomorrow and get Windows Home Premium.

As stated, you don't have to have XP or Vista on the machine. You can even do the cleanest install of all, booting from the DVD, selecting Custom install and using Drive Options to format the drive. The installer will see the RC at bootup and allow you to give your Uprade key.

Do you want to do a clean install where you have to reinstall your files and programs, or try an in-place Upgrade of RC which keeps programs, files and settings but reinstalls the OS? Either are possible.

What is the difference? The only files I really need are the adobe suite, and I can just reinstall them. Thanks for your help Greg.

Then boot from the DVD and select Custom, use Drive Options to delete all, create new partition(s) as you wish, then format before install.

You can do this with the Upgrade version. It will see the RC and allow you to insert the key. If not, you just run a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R from the new desktop after install and it allows the Upgrade key.

Back up your files first.
