Hi All,

I had to take my computer in recently for repair (fan and add another burner) and asked the computer technician to do also do a 'clean install Windows 7'.

How do can I tell if they did a 'clean install' or 'repair'? I noticed there are several programmes that were installed on the computer from 2012 (see below).

When I've done clean installs in the past, I don't remember anything old being left.

Thanks, ms

Your awesome for reading this.
It is possible those programs were installed into the oem image which was then sysprepped or similar. They seem to have the same date.

Could have used the oem image to "clean install" thus ensuring any oem drivers were included, then added updates on 8 &10 feb.

4 things that jump right out are Chrome, the Bing Bar ( get rid of that ) and VLC player, that`s a good player, keep it. And Windows Live Essentials.

They would never be there on a clean install. Unless you put them there.

And a clean install wouldn`t have any updates yet.

Depends what you mean by a clean install. It doesn't look like a normal MS install iso was used.

They could have used oem installation media.

Clean Install

Hi Folks,

Thanks so much for all your fantastic help.:D

Yes, I've confirmed that they used the Asus OEM image installation disks for the clean install. They removed some bloatware but left some. I've removed everything to do with Bing, Chrome, and few others items. I'll put back my Firefox.

Should my Java icon under Control Panel be blank? Recent updates were added.

I'll have to check the extended warranty regarding the OEM version of software with Asus' Manager and Utilities. I do have my own Microsoft Windows 7-64 bit software.

I had to take the computer back this afternoon. It turns out the graphic card fan is on its way out. It's a Nvidia GeForce GT630 (2GB). It only lasted 14 months and its gone! I'm the only one using the computer and I don't play video games! My PSU is only 300 w for this computer.

Also, I'm having problems with the blue-ray burner not reading disks. It won't be replaced until it quits. In the meantime, I had multi-media burner added today. It was cheap!

My old Dell desktop's lasted longer than this one!:sarc:

Your Java icon should look like this in Control Panel

Your pc doesn`t have much on it at all, just fully update it and you`ll be fine ;)

New installs need to be defragmented, make sure you do that a few times.

Hi AddRam,

Many thanks for the advice and reminder about defragmenting my computer.

The icon for Java is not there at all! How would I re-install it?

Thanks, ms

Clean Install

Hi AddRam,

Not to worry about additional programmes including anti-virus and so forth. I have a huge list of my own programmes that are to be installed. I usually wait a few days until all the updates are in place and nothing else happens to the operating system. A little at a time.

I've already put back my Trend Micro Titanium 2014 after several updates from Microsoft.

The only programme I'm debating on re-installing is Nero 10 Multi-Media programme. It's such a glut on my computer. Also I don't particularly like most of their programmes (rather unfriendly). I do, however, like their burning software. I may just install the express and ROM only.

For slideshows, I found the old Windows Movie Maker (v 6.1) for Vista. I much prefer it to the newer Windows Live Version. The other one I discovered was Avidemux 2.6 (64 bits). It's quite easy to use for editing videos.

I have some family photo archiving I need to do including a huge slideshow and photobook.

Always open to suggestions.

With many thanks, ms:D

When it comes to Nero you can do a customized install, just choose the programs you like in Nero and install them.

I only install Nero Express and Nero Burning Rom.

Hi AddRam,

Many thanks for reminding me that I can install only parts of Nero 10. I'll definitely do that this time around.

Best, ms:)
